hello I was wondering if someone could explain what could cause this crack? Is it a die crack?

The photo isn’t clear enough to determine if the metal is raised up around the “crack”. 99.9999% of the time, it’s just a nick on the coin. The only other way that could happen is if something came between the coin and the die during the minting process, which would cause an incuse, or hole/crack. I’m very doubtful this is the case for your coin.

To me it looks like a fissure from a damaged planchet or a struck though type error.
I say this because the "mark" is not a straight line, as from a "scratch or a
"hit type" of dent. And I see no raised metal around it.

Welcome to CT. It's not a penny, it's a cent. Says so on the reverse. To me this looks like a crack from a defective planchet. A die crack would have raise the metal. This is not raised. No straight line, no metal scrapes or anything else to indicate damage. It looks cracked, not a straight line so I can only think of a defective planchet.

Only worth a couple of dollars to a collector of sorts.

Why does damage have to be a straight line ?

Not argumentative, factual. Is your response not in itself, argumentative?
