Well, I didn't see that one coming. I wish the TPGS would do this for coins that had QC. Instead of completely omitting a grade, they can grade the coin and then add the QC label if the color is questionable. I believe this would be best for everyone. Think about it, if the only thing determining a details grade is questionable color, then dipping it would return it to a gradable state.
I do have it in hand. I’m thinking the toning is questionable. It’s not the most obvious AT, but it doesn’t look quite right. And @jtlee321 I agree that for certain details coins this would be nice to see. If a coin is QC, it can still be given a numerical grade (just like any other toner). Having the QC under the number will still make it trade for less than an NT toner.
Kudos to you for being honest. I also feel the toning appears questionable/AT but as you and others have pointed out... it's got that 66 look w/o it. Will you try dipping it? Almost appears heat treated to me?
Besides toners, I collect unusual slabs. That is what attracted me to this particular coin. It's the only one that I've ever seen that shows both details and a grade. To me this is more unique than seeing the wrong date or denomination. So I'll be keeping it as is (plus a 1964 MS 66 Quarter goes for $20-$30 on eBay, so the crack out game doesn't make much sense).
Don't be taking all the cool stuff.. You and I seem to have similar interests. I like interesting slabs, but I also have to like the coin inside. That Washington Quarter is one I would have bought very quickly.
I would have guessed MS-67, then I saw the grade and, well... I’d leave it right in there though, the slab is about as cool as the coin.
