Why is the 500 euro note so boring/bland?

Considering that this might be the highest denomination in the world, I am surprised it looks like play money. No flags of European Union countries, no portraits of European Union countries' historical figures, no interesting design features. And even from what I read about the bridge on the back, it is not representative of any actual bridge in Europe. What are your opinions, fellow Cointalk members?

They designed it to match the coins.

Because Europe wants to get rid of its fun designs for boring modern ones. As a world currency collector euros make me sad. :(

I had an opportunity, a little over a year ago, to get an Austrian 500 Euro note with a Draghi signature. My friend in Europe said they were going to be withdrawn from circulation soon, and he furnished this uncirculated example for face plus postage. The design is vanilla but the note is substantial. It’s larger than our current notes and smaller than our older notes.

The "500" is what makes it "pretty".
