Please offer up a grade for this 1996 Silver American Eagle. I realize it's not the prettiest speciman out there (handling marks) but I still feel it to be uncirculated.
wow! i realize i am really bad at grading.. BUT a 63 with all that damage? Those arent bag marks, looks more like it was dragged on the concrete.
The coin does have a great many contact marks for a Silver American Eagle but nothing that I would describe as "damage". "Damaged" implies that the coin would be body bagged by PCGS and I don't see anything severe enough to disqualify this coin from the grading process.
Looks like a typical 96 ASE with "Dansco" album toning to me... and yeah, I agree with Doug... this one is no better than a 63
Contact marks? Those gouges and scratches cant really be 'contact' marks. And on the reverse, the top and bottom of the shield looks like some heavy toning, almost like rust, that just looks out of place. Im not saying a high of 63 is wrong, i just cant believe it with all those marks.
Daggarjon - First of all I doubt you'll ever find one of these graded a 63. You'll have a hard time finding one graded 65. But look at some Morgans graded as 63 - like this one Morgan 63 - and then tell me you think that the ASE has a lot of marks.
So basicaly, as long as the high points dont show wear, a coin can still get a high grade, even with all those (scratches, gouges, ect) marks? dont take my posts as argueing, its just amazing the 2 coins would grade that high! absolutely amazing!
In MS grades a 63 is not a high grade. A 63 is a coin that has been pretty badly beat up when it comes right down to it. But a 63 in an ASE is almost unheard of. Like I said, I doubt you could ever find one in an NGC or PCGS slab. I think your problem is a matter of perception. That's because you are think that 63 is a high grade when it isn't. It's about as low as you can go with an ASE.
