This is the first campgate I have come across in my cleanings. Such a shame there is all the corrosion. It would be beautiful if not for that Nice centered strike. All lettering easily readable. Shame. Does anyone have some nice campgates to share? I love all the different designs on the reverse. Constantine I, AE follis of Siscia CONSTANTINVS AVG, laureate head right PROVIDENTIAE AVGG, campgate with two turrets, dots in top layer, star above, no doors. Mintmark dot ASIS dot http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/constantine/_siscia_RIC_vII_200_A-2.jpg
Yes, that would be a beautiful coin but for ... Campgates are standard fare in uncleaned LRB lots. As such, condition is often an issue. You asked to see a nice one. Here's my nicest, even though it has some stubborn incrustations around the lettering in the inscriptions: Constantine II as Caesar, AD 317-337. Roman Æ Centenionalis, 3.86 gm, 18.2 mm. Heraclea, AD 327-329. Obv: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, draped and cuirassed bust, right. Rev: PROVIDENT-IAE-CAESS, campgate with two turrets, no doors; star above. Dot left field; SMHЄ in exergue. Refs: RIC 96; RCV 17241; Cohen 164.
That sucks. My only campgate. Licinius I (308 - 324 A.D.) Æ3 O: IMP LICINIVS AVG, Laureate bust left wearing Imperial mantle and holding mappa, sceptre and globe. R: PROVIDENTIAE AVGG, Campgate with 6 rows of bricks, Pellet in right field, SMHA in exe. 3.3g 19mm RIC VII Heraclea 29 (R2)
Here's one, still some remnants of silvering, too. This was sent to me by @Victor_Clark as a freebie when I was just starting out on the Forum. Thanks again Victor.

It's rough and tumble furryfrog but has a certain charm about it with enough detail. I have purchased two in recent times. CONSTANTIUS II, as Caesar. 324-337 AD. Æ Follis (20mm - 3.5 g). Everyone has posted some amazing campgates so far! Makes me peanut butter and jealous. I gotta say though, @Cucumbor 's example is my favorite so far. Love that chocolate coloring. What else do you all have?
I also have an argenteus Constantius, Argenteus - Antioch mint, 8th officina, c. AD 296-297 CONSTANTIVS CAESAR, Laureate head of Constantius right VIRTVS MILITVM, Campgate, *ANTH* at exergue 3.40 gr Ref : Cohen #318, RCV # 13966 (1100) Q
I have always admired campgate coins, these posted by all are great examples. My question , if answerable, how many variations of campgates are there? Not by ruler but by variations of the campgate designs , turrets , door type? Has anyone every done a study?
I feel like that would be like asking how many types of Falling Horsemen there are. Am I right @randygeki ?
Dane Kurth (of Wildwinds) has another website with some incredibly detailed lists. Scroll down this page just a bit and click to download her spreadsheet for campgates and see for yourself the mind-boggling array of minor variations. http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/coins-ric.htm Explore the dozens of other such spreadsheets on that page. See ya in a few years
Thanks @TIF .....If you just wanted to get rid of me, you could've just told me to get lost. Just giving me all kinds of spreadsheets to look at and link my coins to is evil. I love spreadsheets almost as much as I love my own family. It's weird.
Spreadsheets on spreadsheets on spreadsheets on spreadsheets.... Ok, now show us your best campgate. You have to have at least one, right?
