Sorry but no. This is not an SMS coin.

 

SMS coins are not Mint Errors..

 

Those are both business strike coins.
The one with the D on it, was minted in Denver and the other one (no MM) in Philadelphia.

 

One of the problems with YouTube videos is that they don't tell you the whole story about the 1964 SMS coins

NO 1964 SMS WERE RELEASED INTO CIRCULATION.

They were part of the estate of a former mint director. Apparently they were acquired by a well known dealer and started to make their way into major auctions in approx. 1993. Most (all??) were slabbed by TPGs. Unless somebody bought one at an auction, decided to break it out of the slab, and spent it for face value, you aren't going to find one.

Once again, this is why the "Strike it rich" books and YouTube videos are a true disservice to the collecting community.

I completely agree with this statement. This is now the third thread on a 64 SMS by this member. He has gotten references to this, but still thinks that he has found an SMS in circulation. It's not gonna happen!

It's a serious lack of comprehension. I think in these situations we should just tell him it is and have them send it to PCGS. Let them learn the hard way..

SMS = Special Mint Set

From 1965 to 1967 the mint did not make regular mint sets or proof sets. They made a kind of a hybid set that was neither one or the other. The coins were usually better than the typical business strikes found in mintsets but not the quality found in proof sets. Around 1990 I believe, a group of 1964 coins came out of former mint Director Eva Adams estate that shows the same kind of special appearance usually seen on the 1965 to 67 SMS coins. It was supposed that these were test or experimental pieces created while they were coming up with how they would make the coins for the Special Mint Sets. All of the coins from the estate were eventually sold at auction and they all brought high prices. Today they are probably all in slabs, they will NOT be found in circulation or in "grampa's old collection". But several time a month someone comes along witha 1964 coin they are sure is one of the highly valuable 1964 SMS coins.

 

Or 3 one of them being a Denver MM coin.

Seems that mint set's for those years would be worth buying so as to complete sets of coin denominations

 

A lot of the 1965-1967 sets have been broke up by those building sets. Some of the SMS sets had really nice cameo coins. Many of those have been pulled out of the sets and sent in for grading.
