Why is it that there are two systems for cataloging paper money in use right now. For world money it's basically the Pick system, for the US its either the Pick or the Frienberg(?) system. What is so special about the US that we need our own system?

    Cheers,

the easy answer to your question is -- MONEY! the friedberg system has been around alot longer for US notes i believe. The pick system isnt really used for US notes. I mean, US notes ARE in the Pick catalog, but in very little detail! I think they just threw them in the attempt to be included :D I think in the end, what is reffered to as the Pick numbers, bowed down to Friedberg when puting together their catalog :p

This is not unique to the United States. There are country specific catalogs for most countries of the world which do not use Pick numbers either.

The Pick catalogs are intended as a general survey of notes from around the world. It is not a catalog to be used by someone who specializes. Specialized catalogs (and I do not mean Pick Volume I) are typically published in the country that the notes come from. Because a specialized catalog has more detail, the Pick numbering system would not work. More importantly, many of the specialized catalogs came out prior to the first edition of the Pick catalog.

Here is a list off the top of my head of some of the country specific catalogs (by author), all of which use numbering systems other than Pick numbers:

    Australia - McDonalds, Vort-Ronald, Remnick
    Canada - Charlton
    Germany - Rosenberg, Keller, Kai-Lindmann
    Great Britain - Perkins, MacKay

    Very interesting...

I guess if something is worth doing, then it's worth doing at least twice!

    Thanks for the input.

well it isnt really done twice. The Pick catalogs do a quick review, where the local specialized books go into great detail! I have the Pick books, and they are cool, and if i ever go into greater detail for a specific country, i know to get that specialized book. They both serve a purpose.

could you imagine having to buy a specialized book from every country to collect world notes -- that would be crazy!
