Warm with a light dish soaped & distilled water. Let them soak for a little while, At very most over night AND NO LONGER 10 minutes should do. Place onto a dry soft towel and lightly pat dry. Other then that there are alot of cleaning agenst out there to clean metals / coins. I WOULD NOT TELL YOU TO USE ANY OF THEM in your case of dirty pennys. Infact, if the pennys are not in harms way like roating away. Just leave them alone. In short. DONT CLEAN THEM. The only coins i have ever cleaned where ones dug up out of the ground and that was to get the dirt off and that was only a light rinse off under room temp water. AGAIN UNLESS these are coins are in damger of being compleatly distroyed. DO NOT CLEAN THEM!!
I'm fairly new to the hobby, but here's my 5 cents worth... If it's MS-60 or below, clean away... worse thing that could happen is you turn a 23 cent coin into a 6 cent coin... best thing that could happen is you turn a 23 cent coin into a 23 dollar coin. If it's above MS-60, well that's a whole other story.

Hi Santa. Yes, the general consensus here is "don't clean coins". Of course, it really just depends on what coins you have and what you want out of them. Are they average circulated late date cents? If so, whats the harm? The reasoning behind the no clean mentality is strictly in regards to resale. You'll have a hard time trying to sale any cleaned coins as it destroys any value. But, if you like nice shiny coins and they aren't worth any more or any less cleaned or otherwise, then by all means, do what makes you happy with your collection. Of course, it sounds like you're new to the hobby, so stopping by and asking first was smart. You should also let us know what you have before you set your mind to anything that is irreversible. Guy~
