I've read this before, thanks. One of the best hints is the microscope. There are several things I should caution readers about in the article. These methods are suitable for ancients only such as the OP's coins because it is rare to find an ancient coin (Byzantine gold is an exception) that has retained an original, as struck, surface. Another suggestion is to work on a "wet" coin rather than a dry one as there is less chance of scratching its surface while removing contamination.
