Hi folks, New Member, David from Texas, and I just started CRH when not working. Was going through dimes looking for silver and found this interesting piece. Its pretty beat up and I almost sorted right past it... I can feel the raised area when running my finger across the coin. Im not sure what to think... I am hoping others with more experience and knowledge can help me determine if this is a mint error. Thanks for all your time. IMG_4794-2.jpg IMG_4786-2.jpg

Not a cud. Not a mint error. My guess is due to heat damage.

I agree.. The Obverse Clad layer was damage with high temp heat. A bit of the Reverse was also affected. Not a Mint Error.

Thanks for having me aboard CoinTalk. Appreciate the quick response and information. I didnt think of high heat, but makes sense to me.

Welcome to Ct David. And hear my sigh of relief that a newbie here is coming with an open mind. For future reference, a cud will involve and start at the edge of the coin and this happens when a portion of the edge of the die breaks off and extra metal fills the void.

Happy to be in a place where I can learn, and hopefully I'll be able to help others in the future. I've read other threads and noticed a lot of arrogant rookies. smh.
Thanks for the info on a true cud. I was comparing pictures against true cuds and noticed this wasn't quite the same. The elevated portion led me to believe it couldve been filled in metal, but it just didnt seem true. Thanks again for the help in proper identification. I'm sure i'll have another questionable find that'll need a trained eye eventually. Cheers!
