my G-pa gave this to me about two years ago....found this in a box of old stuff when I was looking for it today
What am I missing? The token and its accompanying card clearly refer to the 100th anniversary of the Ford Motor Company, so what could it be other than a token commemorating that event? It sure as ^%&* isn't a monetary item.
Nice! I was looking for one of those during the Centennial celebration. Could be worth something at auction to auto aficionados.
Well we had a Corvette coin with lighted headlights and now this Ford coin. So what happened to my Mopar people? I think we need a Chrysler or Imperial Coin.
You know, looking at this made me think about marketing, and how things at one point in time sound and look like such a good idea, but later they have that "...What were we thinking?" look. Take the Ford logo that is tilted inside the 100 on both the printed brochure and in the token. When it got approved I will bet they thought it looked really modern or retro, whatever retro really is. Now, just 5 years later it looks, well, stupid. My father retired from Ford Motor Company and the UAW. I need to ask him if he has this brochure and token around somewhere. Oh, and Stainless, if you are a young man, hold on to this. It will be worth something in your lifetime. Automotive memorabilia is a HUGE business in this country. And when I say worth something, I am talking about "You are kidding right, it is worth how much again...?" in 25 to 40 years.
These were made for Ford's 100th Anniversary celebration in Dearborn, MI in June 2003 (6/12-6/16)... Not sure if they were given out to all who entered the giant display area, or if it was part of a ticket pre-order package... I think I have two of them... Edit: A little google'ing reveals: "Ford Motor Company's five-day 100th anniversary celebration features a wide variety of attractions that go far beyond simply a love for automobiles. Tens of thousands of people will descend on the 152 acres surrounding Henry Ford II World Center in Dearborn, Michigan, on June 12-16 for a weeklong party dubbed "The Road Is Ours." There are interactive technology displays, concerts, autograph sessions, fireworks, factory tours and a myriad of other fun-filled venues sure to entertain the entire family. Of course, the centerpiece of the Ford Centennial celebration will be the cars. Thousands of Ford vehicles from across the country, spanning all model years from 1903 through 2003, will be on display each day. All you need to see them is a comfortable pair of shoes and $24.95 ($19.95 for Ford employees and retirees). That buys you a credential good for admission on all five days and access to all activities, concerts and displays. Those who purchase tickets by May 25 will get a daily assigned parking area; free shuttle service to and from the event grounds; an opportunity to display their classic Ford car or truck; discounted admission and free shuttle service to several Ford-related local attractions; a 100th Anniversary commemorative coin; and discounts on Ford 100th Anniversary merchandise." --Paul
Holy Smokes, they charged $25 a head to come to their birthday party! Man, I need to get into this kind of a racket, charging people to come to parties I throw. I suppose the Ford family did not think they would make enough off Ford trinkets, t-shirts, posters, and way over-priced food at the event.
