Anyone going to Coinex tomorrow or Saturday? I'll post a report after my visit, tomorrow afternoon I hope.
I would love to be able to go, but a trans-Atlantic flight is a little hard to justify. Best luck @Nerva coin hunting and have a lot of fun. I look forward to seeing what you pick up. There are several dealers that I would love to be able to meet in person after years of internet purchases. It would also be nice to go to a show with more than a couple medieval dealers.
I picked up some coins and met up with Terence Cheeseman. I got a discounted Abafil case and a handful of Roman imperial coins. Nothing particularly scarce, but some great portraits and attractive reverses. And nice to meet a CoinTalker in the flesh.
Nice additions! How was the show overall? I always wanted to go when I was in England but it never panned out sadly.
Nice haul @Nerva Also congrats on the Abafil case, I have never seen one at a discount. I love mine and would not mind another.
Thanks! It was good, but a little overwhelming. I focused on a handful of dealers. I should have planned to spend more time.
Thank you! I love the series, but they’re hard to judge from pictures. These are the first I’ve bought. Common ones, but I like them. The antelope is a bit worn, but it’s a wonderfully charismatic die. Seems much more alive than many of them. I really want a Gallienus kitty cat, but I’m holding out for a great one. Seeing Tif’s has raised my standards.
Yes, I have a couple. Abafil was at the fair and they were discounting. Still pricey, but a great product. And an excuse to buy more coins ;-)
I met Nerva at the show. I thought the show was very good. There were about 100 dealers and the quality of the coins offered was good. There seemed to be few very modern coins. There were a lot of ancient, medieval, and early modern coins. I saw two Syracusian Dekadrachms for sale as well as a number of Charles I 1 pound coins, a number of multiple talers and a lot of gold. The only sour note was that there were no chairs for the customers. However, the show coupled with all the auctions being held concurrent with the show and the presence of a number of brick and mortar coin shops eg. Baldwins, Spinks, NAC, and Sovereign Rarities not to mention the British Museum makes the show week a great time to visit London for any coin collector.
I went and it was my first time. As large or larger than NYINC. Many Ancient and British dealers. Not many slabs, which in nice. It was well attended too, at least on Friday. Really a lot of fun and all the wonders of London to add to the adventure.
I mentioned to Nerva that I had one striped panther issue from the Gallienus "Zoo series" This is it.
I love it! That’s exactly the kind of panther/tiger/kitty cat that I’ve been holding out for. It’s been on my wish list for a while. I’ve seen a few for sale, but none has tempted me yet. Keep me in mind if you tire of it ;-)
That would get tiring very quickly. Not sure my back could handle bending-over trays for that many hours. Was it a space issue?
Nice assortment, @Nerva! That Gallienus goat is particularly sharp. I like all of your Severan choices, especially the Julia Paula. What an unusually good strike on both sides! I have a similar striped kitty which I'm labeling a tigress, rightly or wrongly . Gallienus, sole reign CE 260-268 Antoninianus, Rome mint Obv: GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right Rev: LIBERO P CONS AVG, striped tigress standing left; B in exergue Ref: RIC V 230 (Sole reign) Wow. That would be very tiring indeed! I'd have been tempted to buy the cheapest folding chair or stool possible and carry it to the show.
I cannot comment on the rationale of no chairs. At German shows the same problem exists but the reason cited are fire regulations. There was plenty of room for chairs. There were some benches by the windows so people could sit if they wanted to.
