At What Point Can You Call Yourself a Numismatist and Not Just a Coin Collector?

No. 70-point Sheldon scale. It's what we do.

You know you're a collector when you spend a whole week searching obscure 18th and 19th century coin books and collection catalogs to try to find the meaning of the donkey's head behind Roma on this Republican denarius from 147 BCE. Found a convincing answer in a British catalog written in 1839.

I was definitely not a numismatists until I became an ancient coin collector. The modern slabbbing trend in U.S. coins allows pretty much anyone to get into collecting without having to do any research or have any knowledge other than how to look up the price in the red book. However, ancient coin collecting is still a very research intensive hobby with a steep learning curve.

Well a lot of the research is already done for US collectors via the Red Book and other publications. It all depends on the depth of knowledge that one seeks.

It's actually a subcutaneous chip. When you approach a dealer, he scans your chip to see your current level. Higher levels get better deals.

Can we use this chip to restrict access to CoinTalk? Or at least to the What's it worth and Error subforums?

Yes, you gain access to other subforums at Level 5. There's an achievement you can track on NumisLive. You have to successfully identify 5 series, grade 5 circulated coins within +/- 5 points, and grade 5 Unc coins +/- 1 point. You also have to successfully identify the error or problem on 5 coins. This is a difficult level to achieve, but can be accomplished with a little bit of study.

Unfortunately, if a level 10 or higher can answer your question in less than 10 seconds on google, you loose a level....

Secret cookie? The old Nabisco Cameo that has been licensed to a Puerto Rican bakery? Boy I hope they’re back in production.
