I've wanted to do this for a long time. The only way it to get from the internet? Asking way to much. And for get about them saying unsearched wheat cents you know it's been surched through. Where can I get some wheat cents from? I love wheat cents.
I see them offered on Craigslist every now and again. I also see them listed here and on other community sites that you purchase them from. But, of course, you are right about them not being searched. One option if you aren't worried about sifting through other cents, is to buy the coin rolls customers bring into your local bank or ask them to order you boxes of cents for you CRH.
Shrews... Your best bet is a local coin shop. I helped a friend of mine liquidate his fathers collection. He had a jar of wheats so heavy it took a hand truck to move them. A dealer friend of mine purchased the entire estate and he just bagged up the wheats and sold them in bags of 500 for $20.00 or .04 cents each..... See, dealers don't make their money selling .04 cent coins. That's almost a nuisance to them. On the other hand, the crooks on Ebay have everything to gain by pulling the wool over your eyes. A local dealer is the way to go if you really want to search wheats.
What are you looking for? Are you looking for date/mintmarks to fill a set? Or are you looking for die varieties? Unsearched lots are usually bogus, as you say - but if you are just looking for a bag of wheats to pull out dates, be aware that most of them are heavily weighted to the 40's and 50's. You'll get 20 copies of a 44D, and won't get much before 1940. So, if you want to complete a set, the more efficient way is to just buy the individual coins you need in the grade you want. However, if you want to pour through a thousand wheat cents, buying a bag on Ebay is going to be your best bet.
Why not just settle for bank rolls of cents? I've found a whole bunch of copper pre-1982 cents that way, plus a few wheat cents as well.
Shrews, I couldn't agree more with @Randy Abercrombie. Go to a local coin shop. The price will be less. You may even bargain to a lower price than their asking price. LCS see so many of these they normally don't look to closely at them. You probably won't find a key or semi-key date but will stand a much better chance of finding something that someone missed before. Yes going through wheats is fun. It's worth a trip to get to a LCS.
On one of the Facebook coin forums I'm on someone recently just got fed up with searching cent rolls /bags. Personally, it would drive me crazy if I did that. Edited to preserve our innocence.
If you can get to a LCS don't just look at rolls. Rolls are usually a bit more costly. Go for the bulk purchase. The more you buy the higher the cost but you get each cent at a lower overall price.
