My first ever coin presentation! It will be a 30 minute chat on error coins at the Niagara Frontier Coin Club on October 15th.

I have a photo, bio, and several examples to discuss.

Any advice on dos and don'ts?

    Thanks ~Joe C.

Have you ever presented in public before? I have a hundred tips I could share, but I want to know your experience first.

I am a professor, and give lectures several times a week. Tell me how comfortable you are in front of an audience (and any past experience you have had), and we can go forward from there.

I am a public HS teacher near Buffalo, 16 years. Tons of public speaking. Moreso for what you expect from a speaker at this type of event. Nomally 10th graders, staff members, and parents are my audience.

I have 8x10 color HD photos of coins I am presenting, plus the coins themselves

" Know your audience". " No jokes they would not understand" " Make a list of points and stick to them".... Take a box of cookies from Costco.

If you can't use PowerPoint do you have access to an overhead projector or some way to project images? I can't imagine giving a talk on coins, especially error coins, without being able to point to or show examples. Without an overhead, I guess a large presentation board or large pieces of paper with images would suffice. I have yet to present to an audience without the benefit of PowerPoint, so this is making my brains jiggle a bit. On the plus side, you are presenting to a special interest group, namely, coin collectors, so your audience should pretty much appreciate the subject matter. You aren't trying to sell turkey patties to vegetarians, so you at least have that advantage. In any case, it should be exciting. Let us know how it goes.

I asked about PowerPoint, and they do not have it. They also do not have a projector. I am going to maybe have to set up stations with color blowups on 8x10s

Think on your feet, view them naked (the audience), don't chew gum.......you'll do just fine. Especially after teaching the high school kids. You've nothing to worry about as that natural 'teacher' poise is in place. The audience is your oyster........:)

Like @green18 said. You're a teacher so you got it. Be confident, not cocky. You probably know more about the topic than most of the members so take the opportunity to teach. IMO it's ok to speculate, just be clear on what is a fact and and what is your best guess

I haven't given a coin presentation in a very long time, but from my experience as a professor, the number one key is to keep your audience engaged.

As you present a new coin, ask them what they think might have happened? Or how it was caused? Or what went wrong? Encourage them to ask questions as well.

A good presentation is not so much a lecture as it is a conversation.

    E
EXACTLY! I have several pieces of the same series and type on a page, and I am going to ask them to find the error. Some will have one error, some two, some all, some none. Those which arent errors will have environmental damage or were altered. And a couple "what's the error" segments, with some having multuple. I also asked members to bring some in and discuss them. Engagement is key no matter if students or a bunch of aging coin nerds like us

Write it all up, then get in front of the bathroom mirror and begin your talk. Practice your presentation and delivery........

Even better, record yourself and then watch it back.

And if you want the most honest feedback, post it either here or on youtube. We'll rip you to shreds ;)

Get a projector for your smartphone. It's less than $50.
