I was looking at the DLRC website and noticed this attractive 76-S Trade Dollar, type 2/2. I thought I saw something inside the loop of the 6. After the coin arrived, I could see that is has a repunched 6, CPG variety FS-301, not attibuted on the NGC holder. Graded MS-62.
Just bought this don't have it in hand yet - thinking perhaps sending it to CAC with a few others. Any guesses about it's CAC worthiness? It's currently graded MS62. I'm thinking it's probably album toning as it's so even on both sides. But I like that. I've definitely seen other coins with album toning that passed CAC.
Don’t forget that many of the early large cents (1794-96 and some 97 varieties) were struck on poor quality Coltman blanks, which impacted their quality even more. 1793s were made on scrap copper of even lower quality. My 1798 S-184 is brown, and my 1797 S-121b is almost jet black. The S-121b is slightly porous, but I think the way the different planchet reacted made the difference.
That seems true for this variety as well. Almost all of them are steeply discounted due to corrosion, even those high in the condition census. It probably has something to do with the substandard planchets.
