I’m almost done sorting my plastic container that I’ve been putting all my foreign coins into from my coin roll hunting. I’ve pulled out a few goodies and what you see below is more or less the “everything else.” I could sell this for $4/lb to someone who will probably sell it to someone else and so on. I’d much rather these go directly to collectors or future collectors (edit: as in give them away instead of selling). What are your thoughts? Boy Scouts? Local coin clubs out there? You? I’m open to suggestions.
See if you can cash in some that are still legal tender in their home countries and convertible. You could use this company to turn these into US dollars - https://www.foreigncoinandcurrency.com/
Some I will, like the euros, but those companies pay even less than $4/lb (they pay $5 per 2.2 lbs). I'm also not that interested in making money off these, if they can get into the hands of collectors who want them.
After I pulled out the 1200+ British pennies, I’d say closer to 10 lbs. I forgot to weigh before sorting, haha. Those Canadian are all 40s-65s plus every centennial I found.
You could see if a Scout organization near you would perhaps be interested. My son is a wolf scout this year and there is a general collecting elective and a coin elective. I will be teaching the coin elective It has a part to pick some favorite coins and do rubbings of them and, I think, talk about where they are from etc...
The Greater Houston Coin Club has a Coins for A's program and they might be interested in some world coins. The President of the club is Jack Domurat and his email is email deleted so bots will not add to list. please inquire and PM the info to Sea86.
There was a teacher if I recall posting on CT wanting coins as she was ripped off by a dealer who never sent the coins. She of course uses them for teaching . Can anyone recall this thread?
Less than one. I went through millions of Lincoln’s. I had to stop because the work became too much and the one bank I was allowed to bring them to said I would have to roll the coins to bring them in. Now I strictly CRH nickels and above.
Great idea. Unfortunately, I live in Germany and there’s aren't any local scout groups to my knowledge. The nearest coin club is over an hour away. Maybe someone will speak up and offer to take a bunch of them for their group. I have donated about this many coins to get 15 Scouts their coin collecting merit badge in the past.
