hi all I got this barber half and obviously aside from the slash it’s not bad. Will be a perfect hole filler. But it has black spots all over it. They aren’t on the surface like a gum, and don’t look like carbon spots. Anyone know what they are and if they can be removed?
Try a bit of pure acetone in an overnight soak, in a tight container. I prefer to use an old relish jar. See what shakes.........keep the container tightly closed, as the acetone will evaporate quite readily. Also, don't use Moms nail polish remover, as that contains many extra ingrediances.........you want pure acetone for this maneuver. High grade Home Depot/Lowes stuff......
If that don't work, I've heard that Xylene is a good dipping agent, but I have absolutely no experience with it, as I like most of my coins to exhibit 'original skin'. Heck.....your honey don't look half bad to me.......
So if this were graded would this be considered damaged, VF details - or would it just downgrade because of the scratch? Not that I would grade this I’m just still getting my head around “details” grades.
I would try acetone but don't expect much change. One thing to keep in mind. Circulated silver coins have a lot of little tiny scratches. The acetone is going to make more of them show. It washes away junk that is hiding the scratches.
