I have a 1943 Copper Penny I ran across. How can I tell if it is the real thing?

Hi Mary! I hope for your sake you really do have a 1943 copper lincoln cent. Based on how rare they are, I highly doubt it is one. Please show us a photo of the Obverse and revers (front and back) and maybe we can help you out.

Fake as the day is long...

    Yes. It weighs 3.1 grams.

Look closely, particularly at the obverse.

I did. Under a microscope. What do you see that I don’t?

    Huge fake.
Doesn't even look like a Lincoln cent.
And if it is, the 3 is all wrong.
There's around 26 of these, and yes I believe there was a recent discovery not too many years ago?
But there are millions of fakes, and 26 reals.

I just looked at one and the 3 looks the same.

I noticed the obverse looked off. The rim of the reverse too.

Lincoln looks good with a smile but it looks fake to me as well.

That date is a huge tell tale sign that it is a fake. It is horribly misaligned and you can see damage to the date as well. Sorry, it is not a 1943 copper.
