http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160192750282 I was bidding on the above auction, but it went a little higher than I was wanting to go. First off, am I correct in thinking it to be a Snow-3 ? Second, should I have went higher ? What's the Snow-3 variety worth in F-12 and VF-20 ? I'm trying to cherry some of fleabay, but so are many others.
I don't believe that it is a S-3, look at the length of the inner leaves. Looks like high leaves. However, more important and not listed in Snow: Look at the eagle's wing tip, near the O of OF. I believe that this may be the die that was used for the 1858/7 overdate. Shows the diagonistic 'broken' wing tip. Interesting, and no, not in Snow.
Dang.. This is one of those that is going to haunt me for a while. Thanks for the info, Frank. At least I feel correct in going after this one, if only for a little bit.
Did I miss something? The cherry pickers guide says snow 3 has a broken wing tip and snow 4 has a missing wing tip. Yet on heritage it looked like it was reversed. I could not see anything on the coin for the doubling, but it did look like a nice coin.
Helluvatry roto, It was a good effort to try and win this coin, as it is a nice one. But until you have it in hand and examine it thoroughly it's really hard to tell if it's a Snow die variety or not. It sure looks like one with the broken wing hub. It may be a new variety. The winning bidder bid twice and I think his second bid was high because he thought it was a Snow 3 or something else to cherry pick. That's OK as that's what you do when you see a coin that may have potential. Hey, I bid high for an AU 1857 FE because I saw something I liked. I won it and it turned out to be a new Snow variety! Anyway, I'm certainly finding out how much a gamble Ebay can be. I'm going to have to use other sources for the coins I really want. Ebay has disappointed me lately due to the depiction and misrepresentation of the many coins listed there. There's really no substitute for looking at the coin "in hand". Bruce
