S-251 Reverse I has a short fraction bar with the leaf tip under the middle of M unlike the right upright on Reverse E on the the S-247. The only other short Fraction Bar is a Large Fraction Variety S-257. Obverse 5 has a wide date with the 1 a bit more distant from the curl and closer to the 8 than some others and the 3 distant from the bust. The HWH is under the upright of R.
Fairly easy since there's only one variety of 1804, It is a S-266. It is not a restrike and is not S-266c with the CUD over MERC, but there is too much wear on the obverse over RTY to tell if it is S-266a without the Obverse CUD or S-266b with the obverse CUD. The odds favor S-266a R4 over S-266b R5. But both are rarer than S-266c R2 which can be excluded. Interestingly, this is the only case where the die State/Stage is used for a subvariety determination. All others are based on edge differences.
Yep! This is S-266c with evidence of the reverse CUD over the right side of M before the gearing interferes.
This is the other year with a single variety. S-270. I believe State III, but the distinctions between them aren't to obvious to me.
Here's an 1803 S-245 Breen State III I've been thinking of picking up for $25. Breen says the die state is "very rare" and is touted as rare in auction catalogs but it seems like it's not very rare at all, as I'm seeing a lot of them popping up simply by searching around the Internet. Not sure if it's particularly valuable, either.
I'm not sure how valuable any of the die state rarities are. There seems to be very little demand beyond the Variety rarity to drive the prices up. I may be one of the few that will pay a premium.
This is my latest Die State pickup. It is a Terminal die State S-254 and I paid $34.49 for an R2 which would probably be about a $20 coin otherwise. Maybe no premium with better detail but scratches across the obverse. But it did put me in a market I wouldn't have been in other wise. But this terminal die state isn't described as rare. I already had a couple from misattributing as other varieties from photos. But this shows the clear Terminal diagnostic.
I'd pay that, but I'm not sure how many others would. 3 of the 14 in Noyes are State III or his Reverse Ce.
The first appears to be a bit more worn, but the second appears to be a later die state with mention of the defect in the field running to the neck in the latest die state. They may both be state IIIs.
I didn't think wear would show like that but I haven't seen others and you have seen many. Monthly Show here today and I was shown a small 7/6 but way too much $ for me.
