I know NGC and PCGS have each JR in their variety page, but it doesn't actually explain what it is that makes each die state different. Is there a resource out there that actually explains the differences?
You can visit Wikipe die under Mint-made errors. Very informative Edited: My mistake, I think you referring to the specifics of what JR Varieties. I'm not qualified to give you an opinion.
Not so big on explanation, but pics of nearly all... http://www.byronreed.com/byrons_collections/capped_bust_dimes/index.htm Again, not a lot of explanation (some, though) but pics not just of bust dime DMs, but all the bust denominations half dime through dollar... http://rob.com/russ/collection/index.html If truly interested pick up at least one of the following books Davis, David J., Logan, Russell J., Lovejoy, Allen F., McCloskey, John W., Subjack, William J., Early United States Dimes 1796-1837, John Reich Collectors Society, 1984. Hardbound. Out of Print. Zack, Winston, Scuderi, Louis, Sherrill, Michael, Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide, 2015. Spiral Bound.
Thanks for that! I'll check those out here in a little bit. Good bookmark sites! Alright, here's the coin.... I did use HA as some of the listings had some detailed info for the variety. I'm thinking either JR-7 or JR-8... anyone want to tell me how far off I am?
Also if it's specific to each grading companies, their website has tons of information and you just have to read it. Some seniors will chime as well
It's JR-8 Has block 8 in the date that makes it 5,6,7,or 8. JR-5 has a thin straight flag on the 5 so it isn't JR-5 JR-6 has ME joined at the base on the reverse yours doesn't. JR-7 has the I in PLURIBUS below the right edge of the foot of T JR-8 has the I below the center of the T. Yours is below the center, JR-8
It appears to be JR-5. This die marriage is the only 1835 with a straight flag on the top of the 5. The reverse is very similar to that of JR-8, but the position of the C in “10 C.” is different. The Early United States Dimes book is a very good book that I recommend, but it can be tough and pricy to find/buy. The 2015 Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide is supposed to be more geared to attributions and is cheaper and more available. I don’t own the 2015 book, but it appears to be good.
I'm afraid I erred in saying JR-8 .The flag looked to me to be too thick to be JR-5 so I discarded it. But NSP is right the stem over the C in 10 C is wrong for JR-8 as is the left edge of the curl over the 5. I was wrong and NSP is correct JR-5.
I do have a few bust dimes as well quarters however I'm a half dime guy! Believe me doing attributions on them is hard enough..... some do require a good study as theres re marriages, and some just a slight difference can be splitting the hair between an R-1 of an R -6 . This is one reason that in both bust H-10 as well seated H-10 I've convinced myself that to obtain some die marrages or higher R value coins I will need to lower my F-Xf. To lower grades and detailed coins. I'm not in the scrap range yet....but again haven't cound a rarer h-10 in poor condition that may change my mind as to what I'll accept as a specimen for the collection. The op coin looks nice I would give it a quick dip myself .
I wouldn't dip any bust coin in anything but acetone. E Zest Coin and Jewelry cleaner will ruin the surface in my opinion. It does look like there might be some green verdigris or PVC on the reverse to the left and above 10C. I can't tell from the picture, but I would dip in acetone because of that. If it is verdigris, you may need to dip for up to an hour and then gently pry off with a toothpick or rose thorn. Please do not wipe or rub the coin with anything.
No I wish I had L & M books on both dimes and h 10s. They are pricey if and when you find them. Everything half dime web site it a great tool I use on every purchase of a h 10 bust .
