Maybe, maybe not. I would still have paid MS65 money for it even if it was in an AU58 holder.:D

Thank you. You furthered my argument of buying the coin, and NOT the TPG assigned grade on the holder. Plastic coffins are cute. Well some people think so anyway. They do nothing for me. That said, I own numerous coins in coffins. But the grades on them do diddly squat for me.

I was one of the two, GD being the other that downgraded this coin to 55. I will admit, I am not a particular fan of toning. Perhaps it is because I collect more European wise, and prefer nice original coins as they were struck. Admittedly this coin is perplexing to me with the toning. The pattern of the toning is indeed unique, but all the while the colours suggest AT to my distaste. However I do find differences betwixt this piece and pieces obviously AT because of the pattern of the toning which suggests more might be up with the composition of the coin as a factor in how it toned.

Ya know, I saw that rub on the leg but chose to ignore it because I'm not that well schooled in this series and thought that it just might be a glitch in the photographic process.....still she is a pretty specimen.

I figured it for an AU58... MS63*? HA! Market Grading striketh again. Who remembers that harshly cleaned VG 1916 SLQ I posted? I think it was graded VF30...

I would think why the toning is diferent on silver ,because silver is lighter in color and silver would bring out the colors more vividly. The other reason the toning is diferent then silver as we all know the alloy content maybe that;s why the toning is diferent in nature with certain colors it
brings out on the gold coins just my opion not concret evidence

I guessed 63, but quite candidly, I'm having a great deal of trouble guessing given the (relatively) low quality photographs.

(now looking at the grade) BINGO! :)

"This coin belongs in an AU holder, period."

I'm sure you realize that NGC doesn't technical grade, and rub on the knee doesn't preclude an MS grade, but rather that the price associated with the coin by the market (in NGC's opinoin) is closer to 63 than AU.

"I don't have any idea what causes toning like this on gold. "

While I have no first hand experience on the topic, I have been told by more than one gold expert that heat will cause toning like you see on this coin.

Hello, I saw this thread. I have recently purchased a similar saint with similar toning graded MS64 by NGC....how many of these exist?......just by doing a search I haven't seen any auction records and have only seen the 2 examples in this thread.

Do you have pictures of your coin? I really don’t know how many of these exist, I’ve only seen a handful. And I’m not sure how many responses you are going to get, this thread is 10 years old.

Double Die I know just enough to be dangerous

Being the novice that I am when it comes to grading a coin, let alone a gold one, I'm going to give it a shot. Disclaimer... I made my decision without scrolling down to see what the others have said. I'm going AU58 based on the big scratch and little dings on the obverse fields and rim along with the black discoloration over the date on the stars. The scratch in the sun and dings to the rays and rim and not sure about what's going on under DO of DOLLARS, whether it's a smudge or lighting. It still has great appeal with the colors and I wouldn't mind having it myself.

Can that reverse scrach be repaired professionally. I hope so

Can you tell when it was slabbed. And what are the odds on tonning on reverse opposed to obverse. I know. Crazy question of me. I think if reverse. Im more inclined to believe it to be natural. One would think you would artificially tone the obverse. IMO. Like the 1923 D
