Gem Grade Koson Staters Still Fetch Big Money at Auctions

A handsome gold Koson Stater sold for $3,867.50 last May 16, 2018 at CNG Auction 108, lot 27. See photo below, courtesy of CNG. Despite the huge quantity of these coins still on the market gem quality examples bring big bucks. On October of 2005 a gem quality Koson Stater caught my eye at Freeman & Sear's Mail Bid Auction #12, lot #96. I paid $1,210.00 for the coin & later felt stupid for paying so much :jawdrop:, but didn't regret the purchase. I did have a slightly inferior example of the coin that I decided to send to Heritage Auctions with a large consignment of coins. Heritage promptly returned the coin to me & said they were no longer handling Koson Staters because the Romanian Government was confiscating examples appearing in worldwide auctions :nailbiting:! Anyway, I sent the coin to Great Collections the following year & the coin sold for $1,300.00. I still have the coin from the Freeman & Sear auction, & much to the ire of the "anti-slabbers" sent the coin to NGC to have it placed in a "plastic coffin", see photos below.

Man, that's a beautiful chunk of NGC precious resin. Such masterpiece needs a WINGS sticker too while we are at it. http://wingscoins.com/

Oh yeah, the coin is nice too, I suppose (pending WINGS making a decision for me on how much exactly I should like your coin).:p

TIF, for a short period the Romanian government did confiscate over 700 coins! A German court challenged the legality of these actions & won the case. From that point on everyone began selling Koson Staters without fear again, including Heritage Auctions.

This reply was for Jwt708, I remember using MPCs in Viet Nam, where we called them "funny money". The largest bill I remember was the $10.00 note. The only one I save was a 10 cent note :(.

That's a wonderful coin! Nicely centered too. Congrats. As I said in the tournament, where else are you gonna get an Imperatorial gold coin for so cheap? Here's mine again
