Hey Folks, I have some excess circulated Jefferson Nickels that I'm currently sorting through and taking to the bank. I wanted to help some Young Numismatists (YNs) who needed help filling holes, or collectors trying to help YNs gain interest in collecting. I choose to define YNs as new to the hobby or under 18 years of age. The rules are simple: 1. Photograph your collection of Jefferson Nickels showing the holes you need filled and share a photo or two on this thread. 2. Provide a list of coins you need to fill those holes. 3. If you are trying to help someone else fill holes, please try to send their photographs, or explain in writing why you don't have photos and what you are trying to do. 4. If you are under 18, I will request your parents permission to send them coins on your behalf to be given to you. Edit: 5. Share one link to a website you use to learn more about numismatics. This way, YNs who come here can get some helpful resources. Feel free to share more than one! Feel free to also tag other YNs or collectors trying to help YNs to include them in this. Once you send photos and a list of what you need, I will look for those coins and message you requesting your address. I will mail the nickels to you on my dime (pun intended). Disclaimer: Though I did just find a 1939-S, I rarely find them and this will be a first come first serve basis. I won't be giving out any silver nickels. Please try to keep your requests to before 1970, but feel free to list any ones for some reason you cannot find that are later in date. These coins are ALL circulated in various states. Also, please do NOT put your email or mailing address in this thread. Please do not message me directly with requests. I do intend to send as many nickels to those trying to collect them as possible, but I may take a while to get back to you and/or have to end this due to lack of nickels or time, please be understanding!
Very cool of you @Seattlite86 ! I am not a YN nor requesting coins, but definitely appreciate what you are doing. I gave up on my circulated nickel set after searching close to $50k and missing the 39d and 50d. Perhaps I will start back up again sometime. Those two empty spots are laughing at me.
Thanks! I’m hoping a couple take me up on this. If you still have that nickel set, I am certain I could wrangle up those two missing ones. These batches are rather rich in earlier coins compared to what people find in the US.
Very kind of you! I technically am a YN, but I'm not new and I'm not requesting anything I just wanted to say thanks for doing this for people, getting and keeping more younger people into the hobby is always beneficial for the future.
Thanks for trying to get young people interested. The hobby will need them. But, most are too busy these days will digital stuff. I have a large accumulation from my 70 years of collecting. I am doing what I can to get my 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren interested by giving coin accumulations for Christmas and birthdays. Plus, I pass on some to nieces and nephews.
Thanks Paddy; hopefully the chatter keeps people seeing this to get some YNs and some folks who want to help YNs on it.
For Seattlite...I have several rolls of nickels that I bought in a collection. Let me know if you need a coin and I will check my rolls. If I find one...I will send it to you and you can forward it your YNs.
Thanks! So far no bites, but it may take a little time. I think the best bet will be collectors trying to help YNs they know personally. I will certainly message you if they ask for something I do not have.
My granddaughter watched me with my coins for a while and she wanted to have a book. I helped her and she is picking it up quickly. More fun watching her search for old coins and find one. She is learning quickly and remembers what she learns.
Back in the 60s when circ finds were a better opportunity my father on pay day would bring home either $10 rolled cents or $20 rolled nickels from the bank. Filled two book 2 cents and a partial book 1. Nickels, never found a 50d but found dozens of the others including 15-20 war nickels.
I started collecting in 1948. Everything was still in circulation. I received a 20 cent piece in change rather than a 25 cent piece one time. I wrote off the nickel he owed me.
I think this is really cool. As someone who started collecting in middle school from a gentleman who started a coin club and basically gave his coins away, I'd like to offer some unsolicited thoughts from my perspective. I had the most fun with coins that I had to research, learn about and earn. The coins I acquired as a middle schooler are almost all more important to me than the ones I've acquired as of late. I once bought entire series of dimes and nickels and realized that I didn't enjoy just being handed a bunch of coins, I liked the thrill of the chase. If I could offer any opinions/advice on getting young kids interested in numismatics, I would say give them a coin and tell them to come back to you to report on it. Have them tell you where it was minted, how many were minted, what it's made out of, what grade it is in, etc. and have them put it in a 2x2 and catalog it. The ones who go home and do their "homework" and come back to you with a 2x2 cataloged with all the information are the ones who are most likely to keep collecting. You can also do fun things like slip coins into change you get back while shopping and then have them go through it to "find" a cool coin. This is what I intend to do with my kids when they get older and help them fill penny and nickel albums.
Absolutely Seattlite86. I still have the coin that started my interest. The 1885 nickel that I use as my avatar. My aunt gave it to me in 1948. There are many coins in my collection that I will always remember.
Those are very good ideas I started collecting about 5 or so years ago, (I was probably about 11). My dad used to collect coins when he was younger and he found his old folders. That was what got me interested in collecting. I looked through what my dad had and what he didn't and began my hunt to finish his books.
