I have this dime that has a rather muted and dull face. It looks to be some kind of striking error. The back of the coin is normal. You can barely tell that the year says 199something. I can't see what the mint location was either. There is also quite a raised edge on the front. I apologize for the pictures but I only have a camera on my phone.
Most likely the coin was struck by a later-state capped die (muted obverse details plus obverse finning) but there is no way to tell from your small, blurry photos. Try to post better photos and you may get a definitive answer. If it is a brockage struck by a later-state capped die it would be a very collectible coin.
PolarBear, I have the same dime! Hey Polarbear, I have the same dime but the front is a perfectly clear and vivid strike. However, the last number (199?) is missing. Also The "I" in In, And the "W" in WE are missing. It has an unusually deep ridge around the edge like the press hit it harder than it should have. The back is fine. Pictures to folow as soon as I learn this Coin Talk site. I just joined 5 minutes ago.
I just found a 199? P dime. The "I" in "In" as well as the "We" are also missing plus the last number in the year. The top half of the letters in "LIBERTY" are hardly there as well and the rim edge is thiner on the top right, right above his head. Is it worth any money?
