I was one of the "lucky" guys to get through and order the 2018 Palladium bullion coin earlier this week. And now, my bank is telling me the US Mint has double billed me, with two identical transactions of $1,392.45 posting to my account. Has anyone had similar problems with the mint in the past?

They may double ship your order as well.

have the transactions cleared the bank, or are they still pending? i've had pending transactions appear twice in the past, but when they clear one will dissappear. If not, maybe contact your bank and let them know that one is valid and the other is an error.

Wait till they clear. If they both process, then check your shipping confirmation email, it will include quantity shipped. If there are two, awesome! If there is only one, call them and get a refund.

    ouch $$$

I hope you get a refund, or at least 2 Palladiums. I'm sure you'll get one of the other.

This all came about as the result of fraudulent charges on my HSBC MasterCard yesterday. I had travelled to Philadelphia to attend the ANA Convention, and then last week a bogus charge appeared from my hotel (Le Meridien) that I stayed at for $63. I called the hotel, and they claimed it was for mini bar and room service. I don't drink, and even if I did, why would a charge be posted 11 days after I checked-out? Contacted HSBC and contested the charge.

Then yesterday, while I was the Long Beach Show, I got a text telling me that HSBC had detected suspicious activity on my card, and asked if I had made a purchase at Walmart in Philadelphia earlier in the day. I replied NO, and that shut the card down.

When I got home last night, I went online to see what charges were on there, and the fraudulent charge wasn't there. Neither were charges for the Queen Mary in Long Beach where I stayed the night before the show. Also noticed nothing there for the US Mint, which really got me concerned since they had already sent me a shipping confirmation email. That's when I called HSBC.

Apparently the card had been used all up and down the east coast yesterday, they had deleted the transactions, and when I asked about the other legitimate charges, they said they will still show-up in a few days. When I asked specifically about the US Mint to insure the charge was in progress (that they wouldn't be turned away if the mint tried to submit and process a payment for it next week), HSBC said the charge was already there pending at HSBC, and that there were two charges for the identical amount! They advised me to contact the mint. Since the card is now shut down, beats me how a credit is supposed to be issued. Maybe I will get two coins, who knows.

But I will tell you this, I have had so many problems with credit cards this year that I am about ready to convert back to barter. My Capital One Visa has been suspended 4 times in less than a year because of "suspicious" activity, in each case genuine legitimate transactions. The hoops I have to go through to get it turned back on are maddening. I am one of those lucky guys who get to do coins full-time for a living, including international travel, but the logistics of it makes me sometimes wonder if I should bring an ox and a couple sheep every time I check-in to a hotel to offer a barter payment in lieu of credit card.

"Here you go! Your pick! The ox, or the pair of sheep!"

Three years ago when I was in Iceland my credit card got hacked. When I got home the card company called and asked if I had been in India, I told them no and they said my card was compromised then. Cancelled card got new one. I even called the card company before I left and told them where I would be. Its funny I have travelled three times overseas since then -Mexico, Jamaica, and Dominican Republic and the card was never hacked.

And if it's a ram and ewe, you can get a lamb or two every year. Try that with your precious-metal coins, or even greenbacks.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how the TSA handles livestock.

I hear and understand your frustration. Having said that, I always appreciate when I’m asked for ID at the counter, or when the bank calls to confirm a purchase. I’d rather them pay close attention than none at all. I hope this all works out in the manner best for you. Good luck!

Well, just talked to the mint. They said the first charge was a pre-authorization that should fall-off after a couple days. The second charge 90 minutes later is the actual transaction. Beats me why HSBC wouldn't be aware of that themselves, but when you're paying someone a $1.50 an hour in the Philippines (or wherever) to provide customer service, I suppose expecting them to know what they are talking about is too much.

Can you not see your credit card on line? It would have shown you this.

Maybe someone close to you is "borrowing" your cards.

Any deadbeat family, friends, or recent guests?

Come to think of it, the last couple of times I've flown, I have had the impression that we were all being treated like sheep...

There was nothing there for pending transactions last night, HSBC was able to see it but I couldn't. It's there online this morning, but it sure looks like two charges to me.
