1972 quarter question

Hello all.. I have a 1972 quarter that when looked at from the side, the nickel/copper layering is reversed compared to other '72 and other date quarters. The one in question has the copper ring on the reverse end and the nickel ring on the obverse end. Every single quarter I look at is opposite of this. Just wanted to know if something was going on here.. No pics right now as I am in work, but I thought that explained it well.. If not, I can post pics later. Thank you!
btw, I looked all over the internet and couldn't find anything..

Take a picture and post what you are seeing. I'm not understanding what you are trying to describe.

What is the reverse of "nickel/copper/nickel"? There are three layers, not two.

 

Sometimes the middle copper layer is smeared across one of the nickel layers when the planchet is punched. This will "hide" one of the nickel layers. Whether the hidden nickel layer is on the reverse or the obverse side is completely random.

OP claims he has always seen it one way only. He needs to look at more coins.

 

Why don't you hold off on the derogatory statement until after I have posted the picture? I should have known better and held off on the question until I was able to attach a pic. Your first paragraph was helpful and then I lost all respect for you when I read the second paragraph..

I'm seeing now from looking at a few others that it is random, as CoinCorgi mentioned. Up until now, I haven't seen them done any other way.. Guess I gotta look at more coins..

 

This is a revolutionary insight. You know how TPGs designate Edge Lettering Position A and B on the dollar coins? I think that they should designate cladding shift on everything else, and state whether it is obverse or reverse! This will completely alter the landscape of modern clad coinage collecting forever! Huzzah, millions in new submission fees! Millions in new Registry entries! Huzzah!
