I've been to one coin show so far, I spent 12 dollars on a bunch of bargain bin wheats and mercs. But now another coin show is ahead. Both of these shows are very local and considerably small. This time I hope to pick up a raw VDB for my raw Lincoln set and maybe a morgan or two. I will post my results after! Talk to some of the dealers...now you got wheels they might be interested in having you work for them.
Also ask about coin clubs in the area. Many of these small shows are pt on by clubs. Having been a member and officer in small, local clubs in the past, I can tell you that they love to help young collectors. I used to drive 45 min to one local club and rarely missed a monthly meeting
What security purposes are you taking about? If the show is public then It’s common knowledge when and where it will be.
Nothing wrong with being security conscientious in this hobby. Maybe you could figure out all of the small shows in the next few weeks and narrow it down or pinpoint it, but at least it isn't simple. I'm sure at some point, somebody was going to ask the kid where the show was, so this may be his attempt at respectfully saying he doesn't want to say. IMO it's difficult to hold the line between sharing your interest in numismatics with others and keeping your valuables safe.
Don’t be too afraid that it limits your interactions with other great people. I’ve met some nice people just by saying what show I would be attending. I don’t think it’s a bad thing.
I don't know. I've been raised very security conscientious. Not to the point of restricting my freedom but enough where the chances of harm are very little. I'm sure y'all are great people but I cant be 100% sure. And thats with meeting anyone over the internet
Shoot, I'm surprised I ain't had a home invasion yet (NY Metro area) but it ain't happened..........and I'm on the net. Guess I'm just chicken feed...... Got's a slingshot though........peril anyone who walks through that door un-announced.

some of us are more trusting and some of us are more paranoid when posting personal hobby info on here (I tend to fall towards the latter). I think that as long as you understand the pros and cons and are comfortable with your personal decision, than that's fine. I'm sure if someone wants to find out the identity of someone on CT, it can be done, but I just try to make it a little harder. Just be clear, I enjoy the pics of people showing off their coins and knowing a little about the members on here, so I'm not being critical, I just think it's a personal decision
Nothing wrong with that. Security is my first thought with anything I do with this hobby. It took me over 10 years on the forums to ever agree to meet a member at a show. When I was about 13 the bad guys took most of my collection. They only left me my Lincoln collection in an old Whitman folder. This was a great lesson for me. As collectors, our greatest risk are local. Friends/neighbors/family and anyone we share our passion for the hobby, are a risk. Tough choices.
Probably about that same age for me, turned out it was a school "friend" and he put it all in a pinball machine...
I can certainly understand and respect that, but I doubt anyone would target you over a raw plain VDB and maybe a couple of Morgans, especially when others out there will likely have many, many thousands in cash and/or largely untraceable goods on or with them. Depending on where you go with this hobby (since you've mentioned transitioning it into a business), you're going to have to find a happy/comfortable medium. To much secrecy will (or can) put you out of business or at least cost potentially profitable opportunities as well as ensure few know who you are.
