Forum, I found a Monroe dollar that is a good strike, mirror surface, but the metal is clearly not the common metal used in the layered dollar coins. I don't think it's the errors that were minted on quarters because the coin is full, not partial. And those were a different president. Picture attached. Any feedback would be appreciated.
didn't we just have a thread about this ... plated presidential dollars. You can get them platinum plated, silver plated, etc. Very common aftermarket thing to do. And they seemingly end up in circulation after someone needs a dollar. Oddly, the bottom one seems to have a longer neck and a larger coin. I assume from the closeness of the cell phone and distortion.
The lower resemble the thermal damage mine received after my shop burned. They were stored in a simple cash box but the heat changed the tone of several coins. They were still easily found at the time so it was no problem to trade them in at the bank for new ones.
Per US Mint and BEP, they doesn't support plated or colored coins but they don't ban them either. They don't refer them to DOJ as long as they don't infringe on their copyrights.
What's the mint mark say? If it is S it's a proof and if it's a P or D it's plated. Can't tell from this photo.
Yes I am familiar with the MM placement, I was asking the OP. In either case the metal alloy is still the same.
Sorry for delayed response. New to posting. Bad photo, I agree. The bottom coin looks distorted due to angle. I was trying to find that coin to update the photo, but can't locate. I thought it might be plated, I have seen quarters plated gold before and painted, just never a dollar. It's different so might as well keep. Thanks all.
