Found this 1964 D Lincoln in change the other day and noticed a funny looking blob near the date. At first I thought it might be glue or something on the surface, but when I looked under magnification it was part of the coin itself. Not sure if this is lamination or what, as I don't collect errors or oddity coins, but I thought it was interesting. Guy~
looks to me like a piece of the die migth have broken off. it is tough to tell, and i am not an expert. but that is my opinion. so, maybe a cud?
I thought it might be a cud too, but I noticed it did not go all the way to the rim. Is there any evidence of a weak strike on the reverse in that location?
There is no weakness of strike on the reverse side. In fact, it appears to be better struck than the obverse side. Guy~
I have a few cuds that arent at the rim. I have some wheaties where the cud is located at the wheat stalks.
Then I suspect post mint damage, perhaps braze-welding. I should have mentioned this before, I Am Not An Expert In Mint Errors - or an expert in anything else, for that matter. I like the pic. Did you put the coin on a pedestal to put distance between the coin and background? Whatever you did it shows detail well.
Looks post mint to me, but I could be wrong. Just something not right. Still, pretty neat, I'd keep it if it were mine. :thumb: Phoenix
I'd keep it if it were mine too. Just to study on. I would want expert opinions to determine if it were damage or cud, but still, a study piece. (of course, I'm partial to errors so maybe that's just me.) Insert smiley here . . .
