    Hey guys. I got a question I was hoping maybe someone could help me out with. Ive got a 1971 washington quarter ddr that I found in pocket change and it has very obvious , very strong doubling on devices other than the only variety that I found listed. My question is, If a coin has doubling on devices other than any known varieties, is it a new variety?

    You need to provide pictures or you won't get much help.
    If it's anything other than Doubled Die doubling such as Mechanical Doubling or Die Deterioration Doubling then it is not a new variety.

    Yeah, what paddyman98 said.

    Pics (& I mean good pics) for this type of question are critical if you want an assessment here. The vast majority will turn out to be MD or DDD.

    Consider the amount of wear on the circulated coin...if a '71 quarter has a good amount of wear, the chances are it would have been picked already if it were truly "doubled", & the fact that you didn't find it in a cursory search of varieties would give pause.

    So, right now, the answer to your question is yes, but you still have to figure out if it's true doubling.

    Let's see pics & go from there.

    The recognized dbl die is a strong Class I, with a counter-clockwise spread on all the peripheral lettering and little doubling on the other design elements. A picture of yours is needed-no assessment can be made without one.

    Without pics I'll give it a 70% chance it's md.

    OK. Thanks everyone for your help. Unfortunately, I am not tech savvy and have little patience when it comes to electronic devices. Hence, the absence of photos. I will repost this inquiry again once I have good quality pictures. But just for the record, My question did not need any pictures in order to be answered.

    You are correct. A pic is not needed to answer your question. If a coin has TRUE HUB DOUBLING, and is not listed on the recognized sites such as variety vista or wexler's doubled die then it's likely to be a new variety.

    However, nobody can comment on your specific coin without a pic. One of the most difficult things in error collecting is determining true doubling from the worthless types such as machine doubling or die deterioration doubling which are much more prevalent.

    Well, technically you are correct.

    That said, when you preface the question with a claim to possess something relating to your question, you will immediately trigger certain responses. And you will find you'll receive far more responses if you post pics.

    For one thing, we like to see pics of coins, especially when someone claims to have something special - it's our nature.

    Secondly, most of us will not respond to either theoretical or rhetorical questions. We spend much time going through as many posts as possible, most of us daily, in an effort to lend a hand & don't have time for the superfluous...in fact, as I rapidly went over your OP, had I realized that's all you wanted, I would not have even responded.

    And as for the following,

    ...I would recommend that you not suggest that you have little patience for anything, when you are asking for help or an answer. We understand that people may have limitations in certain areas, but it's the effort put forth that's important.

    Btw, welcome to CT! :happy::happy::happy:
