I much enjoyed I-Claudius, but think his really great book was White Goddess. It seems to operate in a space somewhere between fact and fairy story, without being exactly either the one or the other. (oral history seems a bit like these worn old coins - vague and ambiguous - you can only half tell what is really going on.) I came across details of an overlooked and strangely Gravesian archaelogical find recently. The story is a bit complicated, but I will find time to put up a thread, in case of interest Rob T
