Hey Ancient dudes. Long time no talk. I just came across these and could use some help from the brain trust. The ones I think are silver I have numbered. If you wouldn't mind IDing the ones you can for me using the numbers that would be awesome. And is there any value here either in the silver ones or any others that may pop out at ya. Thanks a ton guys! :)

I have to say, I think my favorite is #2. No idea why. Maybe because it has some nice subtle iridescent toning and the design is simple?.. Did I pick a good one lol.

Nothing of great value here, though many are nice-looking. I collect Antonine women and so #5 is my favorite. Here's the one in my collection:

Faustina Sr AVGVSTA Ceres standing denarius.jpg
    Faustina I, AD 138-141.
    Roman AR denarius, 3.41 g, 17.4 mm, 5h.
    Rome, AD 147-161.
Obv: DIVA FAVSTINA, bare-headed and draped bust, right.
Rev: AVGVSTA, Ceres standing left, raising right hand and holding long torch in left.
    Refs: RIC 361a; BMCRE 417; RSC 101a; RCV 4583.

It would be better to remove the coins from their 2x2 holders and take better pictures. Post the coins in individual threads but please don't flood the board. Post just a few per week and you'll get more help. More than that and people will get annoyed deploy the Ignore button.

There are some interesting albeit low grade coins in your box and in those holders. Of course, on this board all ancient coins are interesting :D

How did you acquire these coins and are you keeping them or selling them?

    1. Roman Imperial. Antoninus Pius denarius, Fortuna reverse. I can't tell which of the many different types yours is (need to be able to read the legends on both sides)

    2. Roman Republic. Moneyer Mn. Cordius Rufus denarius, reverse is Cupid riding a dolphin. The link is to an example in CNG's archives. That is a handy place to check comparisons and values, although CNG's coins generally in better condition than all of yours so you'll need to factor that in your assessment of value.

    3. A late Roman bronze issue. Not sure who. Need better pictures.

    4. Roman Imperial empress denarius. Not sure who but possibly Orbiana or another empress from around that time. Can't tell from the pictures if the coin is a fourree (ancient counterfeit) or not.

    5. (RC already identified it)

    6. Too worn to tell although better images might help.

    7. Will probably be identifiable once you remove it from the holder and provide clear images. The reverse is PAX AVGVSTA.

    8. A modern forgery/fantasy/fake of Tetricus

    ...

There are some interesting coins which you didn't number. Measure the diameter; weigh each coin. When you post a coin for ID, give the dimensions. Store them in mylar flips or archival paper envelopes.

The coin with the rooster is probably a fake.

The coin labeled "Drachma Greek" is probably a tetradrachm from Roman Egypt. Ditto for the one labeled "thick Greek bronze".

Thanks for the awesome info guys! And sorry about the late response. With the Long Beach show all my attention and time was taken up.

@TIF, I would love to but that's way too much work to photo and post each individually for me right now. I was just sharing looking for a bit of info and a general consensus that there weren't any rarities. I might keep one or two but I will probably sell the rest to answer your question. If you see any you like PM me.

And I must say, this forum is ROCKING. This post was like 5 pages back!

No, I don't want any. I only asked because we generally don't bother to respond to "what is this and what it is worth" posts if the poster is just a seller hoping to avoid the work of learning about what he is selling.

Each time we get a new member or someone who slides over from the modern side asking us to sort coins and set up their sales, they act like we have never seen this trick before. What you are saying is you are happy to sell fools who collect ancients your unwanted coins but you are too busy to put in the work that we should do for free. The people on this board are happy to help new folks learn what they need to know to enjoy the hobby but we are tired of repeated requests from pretend dealers who want free labor. If you want to sell the coins, take them to a dealer who handles such things and ask for his offer. Most will refuse them since dealers tend to get enough of this sort of material when they buy a collection that includes coins that will sell easily. Ancients have a problem not seen in US coins where the worthless still have a face value. There are coins that would take more effort to market as individuals than they are worth unless you get lucky and find a new collector who finds them worth studying. Donating them to the Latin teacher at a local school is the easy way out. Selling them as a group to someone with surplus time is only slightly more profitable.

May I suggest that you not begin by addressing members as "ancient dudes"?

Whoa. What's the attacks all about? I didn't post this to make any sales here. I'm always interested in gaining numismatic knowledge outside of my area of expertise. Just because someone doesn't collect ancients, and will probably sell most that they are looking for info on, some of you guys get upset and don't want to help??? That's incredibly petty and rude. In my area, VAMs, we get similar questions from newbies to our arena but we don't berate or belittle them. We help them! It's great because they show interest and if they start making money on them they come back and back and most become collectors / forum members. If this is how you treat outsiders looking for info, how do you honestly expect to gain new memebers and be anything more than a show and tell echo chamber? Maybe, just maybe, you are shooting yourselves in the foot with that kind of logic. I didn't post I was going to sell any.. I was asked!.. And quite surreptitiously on your part I might add, @TIF. Bad form bro. I kind of like ancients and maybe I'll dive into them and ancient politics a bit more in the future but with your attitude and tricks, if I was a newbie and not a confident experianced numismatist, I would probably think this isn't a community I would want to be a part of... So I'm sorry to "waste" your time and mine, Ancient Dudes. I guarantee it won't happen again, at least not here. Or maybe it will just so I can expose the backhanded nature of some here.

And @dougsmit, I never asked to set up my sales. Either overtly or covertly. No "tricks" were being played by me. Heck, I might not end up selling any of them. Get off your high horse bro.

@Aidan_(), LOL, I know right. Sometimes I like to play with Monopoly Money :playful: What's up brother! Did you do Summer Seminar again this year?

You have some nice looking coins. I especially like some of the bronze coins you have.
