It seems as though ICG isn’t the only TPG doing a little *ahem* “puff puff passing”, shall we say, after hours in the grading room. How and why did NGC even certify this? Even with high quality pics in their database, viewing the mint mark on this coin leaves a lot to the imagination....... Weakly struck mint mark or what??? https://m.ebay.com/itm/1901-S-Barbe...4AAOSwNeVbhbvE:sc:USPSExpressMail!64850!US!-1
It’s there...... and maybe in the right location...... but with a coin of this value.... shouldn’t there be a little more of the metal visible to be certified? Or is this typical for some examples of this date? (Quarters aren’t my specialty but I occasionally fantasize about a complete key date Barber set)
The people in that grading room have seen far more coins than you and I combined. There is obviously a mint mark there. You’re right, though, it is difficult to make out what it is. I’m sure the professionals can tell pretty easily that it’s an S, especially having the coin in hand.

I spend hours in the grading room as it is my "home-away-from-home" and a place I want to be. Yesterday (Sunday), on another coin forum, I let my friends know that I was in the grading room (6 hours). You see, while your coins are at ICG, They belong to me and make up my awesome collection! Now, *ahem,* please explain your slur above. It seems to me that you have a lot of knowledge about the workings of ICG as you have sent so many coins to them in the past. What exactly is "puff puff?" NEVER MIND I'm not really interested in your opinion about anything. I see you are just a twenty-two-year-old kid who recently joined CT. Welcome aboard! Sorry I was rough on you as you have a lot to learn. A word of advice: The boards can be tough. Make sure you know what you are talking about before posting. "Nonsense" is rarely tolerated.
That wasn’t a slur by any means. I actually own and have owned ICG 1916-D Dimes that were graded far more accurately and had greater eye appeal than ones in competitor’s holders. One that I bought in 2012 was the most premium example of an AG3 with eye appeal of a 4, and it resided in an ICG holder. (Still kick myself for selling it) Just last week I bought another ICG graded key date Mercury. ICG is a solid service and I respect them highly. I was simply making a lighthearted joke in reference to the 42/1 Merc that obviously should have details graded by ICG..... No need to be so uptight.
Really now..... was that necessary? Does this reflect the overall attitude towards younger numismatists in the field? Perhaps this is why the previous generation wonders and whines that there aren’t enough younger folks in the hobby? And FYI, I was being facetious. Nothing I said was intended to offend anyone.
My friend owns a 1901 S PCGS AG03 barber quarter with ZERO montmark visible unless you use your imagination. I showed it to PCGS at a show and they said, "it's there."
I take it that it’s just an anomaly of this issue then. These aren’t my specialty, I was just surprised as I’ve seen plenty in lower grade with bold mint marks.
Yes there is definitely a mint mark there. It clearly isn't an O, and Denver wasn't open yet. Hmmm I wonder what mintmrk it could be?
What you wrote in your OP is what we read, & it was a slur whether you intended it to be or not. Perhaps you should read your written words out loud to yourself before posting next time, to make sure you are conveying your thought in the way you want it to be received. As for your comments about coins & different grading companies, you must realize that although there are many "guides", grading is still subjective, especially when viewed from a pic rather than in hand. (Which is a reason many experienced collectors avoid slabs, & prefer to make their own assessments.)
There are 2 different die pairings for the 1901-S that I'm aware of... but that's the extent of my knowledge.
There are plenty of situations and examples, that not only I, but other on this board have witnessed, of the TPG’s screwing up. I was not trying to damage the reputation of NGC or ICG, and I pointed out my high regard for the latter. I don’t understand why a simple, lighthearted, and humorous remark and complete farce situation, which I posted in another thread, again, which I clarified to be something intended as humorous, got certain individual’s panties in a bunch. I thought the general demographic in numismatics had thicker skin than this. I also was not flaming, being rude, or making personal attacks either.
But, but, but... everybody knows the dudes at PCGS hit the bong, leave work early, and go surfing every Friday, bruh! Some even think, based on the grades they get, that the pot brownies must already be on the breakfast tray when they come into work! (I kid, I kid.. )
It's not about being "thin skinned." It's about rudeness at this point, no matter what you intended. See?
