It will be amazing to see four new reverses for the Lincoln cent next year. BUT, I would love to see, for the original copper compostion cent for collectors, a 2009-S VDB. Using the original Brenner designed Lincoln head and those wonderful art deco wheat ears. Of course, V.D.B down there, where it belongs. And, restrict the mintage to 484,000!! that would be just too KOOL! :thumb:
As neat an idea as that would be, the average collector wouldn't stand a chance at even seeing one, as dealers would be fighting tooth and nail to secure them all at face to charge us some rediculous markup in the name or "rarity", even if it is a false rarity. If you don't mind paying steep prices for modern coinage, then I guess it would be ok. It would surely be a big boon for dealers. Guy~
Id **LOVE** a real rarity to come from the mint. And not some 'extra leaf' or odd variety. that 2009-s vdb would be collected tooth and nail for generations, just like the first one. Sure would wake up collectors!
I can't wait either to see the copper composition again, shame it's only one year. Much better looking than the zinc, IMO. But, that's just me. I honestly hope they don't make the mintage 484,000, lol, I'd never be able to own one, unless I was really lucky. Phoenix
In this day and age, you can't "make" rarities. Rarities happen after the fact (sometimes 20-50 years later) - when everyone says - OMG, why didn't I buy that when it was available. THAT is what makes rare KOOL. If the mint were to announce such an absurd thing as a 484,000 run of anything, that isn't rare, that's ridiculous.
If 2009 passes without some new Lincoln Cent Variety.... I will be shocked. 2006 had 2 bold ddo's, including the "doubled ear" DDO 4. Collectors will search through 1000's of these, examining each detail. I can't wait! Brad www.lincolncentresource.com
Returning to the original VDB lincoln design will be the key to if ill be interested or not in the cent. if they keep it to the flat , etched details they use today then forget it.
This is an older article, but has info that makes it appear that the 1909 design will be followed. No word on the reverse though... http://coinsblog.blogspot.com/2005/12/presidential-1-coin-act-also.html
that would be neat if they used the wheat back reverse again. with a mintage of 480,000, we wouldn't stand a chance.
I wouldn't mind seeing them do this but only if they were to salt them in amongst the regular release cents. Everyone would have just as much chance of getting one and at face value no less! A move like that would REALLY spark new interest in collecting. Richard
Heck, Id pay the mint $50 for the coin. After all, it costs 2.2 cents to make one in copper! Why dont one of you guys good in photoshop make us one? You can use my 1909 proof here for the base.....you gotta find your own "20" though....
I'd buy that in a hearbeat. Seriously, IF they made them like that (the design I mean, which I doubt they will), then I'd really consider buying one or two. Phoenix
I would agree that it would be a neat idea to make the 2009 cent a wheat ear reverse. I really like the idea. But I hope that the mintage is in the millions so to give the average collector a chance at owning one of these coins. Otherwise it will be dealers grabbing these up and overcharging collectors for them. Kind of like we have now.
I Like It! Here, grab the "S" from this one! PS I love the way Lincoln "smiles" on the old head. Brenner designed the coin that way, he imagined Lincoln talking his son, Tad.
A new penny 484,000 is just to low. I mean, not even big dealers would be able to have one or not even people like me would ever even see one in person. As much as I love the wheat penny I don't think anything like that will ever come out. Rigo A.Kiss
