Hi, After taking over a year out from collecting I've bought my first coin, i believe this is the error date of the series. its slightly bigger than my other rupee at 25mm but it has the full design where as my other doesnt. Just wondering if anyone could confirm this for me please ? ive tried googling but i can't find any definitive answer.. thanks in advance, Mark.
I believe this coin is a contemporary counterfeit made for circulation. The legends are very crude and poorly shaped. It also looks like silver wash is coming of around the the corner to the edges and a copper looking material underneath. If this is a silver plated coin with copper core it would be significantly underweight. However, you mentioned it's slightly larger than normal diameter. This is often done on purpose to get counterfeits closer to normal weight, a little extra diameter and/or thickness. Have you weighed it? Reference weight for these has some variation, but curious what this one is. I collect contemporary counterfeits and am jealous of you for getting this one
Hi, I’ve been advised this coin is listed by Scholten as a dating error by the mint who didn’t understand the Islamic dating. There’s also an error in which the figures are the opposite way round giving the date as AH 1668. All of the Java Coins are crude but I love them. I have quite a few. I’m struggling to find myself a non-porous copper doit but I already have two in lower condition along with the tin doit, a couple of half Stivers, a 1 stiver with decent date and denomination which is quite hard to come by and another Rupee. I need a silver and gold half Rupee to finish the type set
