World Currency with Buddhist Themes - With Images! I just got a new scanner and was playing with the settings so I thought I would post a portion of my fledgling collection of word paper money with Buddhist themes. OK Here is goes... 1.1985 20 Dong p-94a from Vietnam. The obverse features a picture of Ho Chi Minh while the back has an image of the One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi. While not stricktly buddhist, since this is a contemporary version of the One Pillar Pagoda, the origional was built in classic buddhist style. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o153/d_lairson/198520dongvietnam.jpg 2. 1991 100 Dong-small font P-105 Vietnam. The reverse of this features Pho Minh Temple, a buddhist temple built in the 1300's ( and later rebuilt ) http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o153/d_lairson/1991100dongvietnam.jpg 3. Series 2006 5 Ngultum P-NEW Bhutan. The Obverse features what I would call "Dragons", the reveres features the Buddhist Hermitage of Taktsang. The Original 10th century hermitage was burnt to the ground in late 1998, this bill features (from what I assume) the completion of the reconstruction of the hermitage http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o153/d_lairson/20065Ngultrumbhutan.jpg 4. 1967 1 Kip P-2 Laos. A simple note with a stylized buddha on the obverse and a seal on the reverse. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o153/d_lairson/19671kipLaos.jpg 5. 1956-1976 50Riels P-70 Cambodia. This note features fishermen on Lake Tonle Sap on the obverse, and Angkor Wat on the reverse. It also features a "Buddha Head" as a watermark. AngKor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world. It has been featured in many movies. It is actually a series of temples built by the Khmer people with Angkor Wat itself being built between 1113 1150. Some of the other temples in the complex date to around 950 AD. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o153/d_lairson/195650rielscambodia.jpg 6. 1944 10 Roepiah p-131a Netherlands Indies - Imperial Japanese Government. A cute obsolete note featuring a Java Dancer on the front and two buddhas on the reverse. If you look at the Buddha's you will see that they are in two separate poses, both of which have significance in Buddhist theology. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o153/d_lairson/194410roepiahindies.jpg I hope you have enjoyed this little shotgun blast of notes. Cheers, David
VERY COOL. i love the design, and especialy love the depicted buildings. I have an Architectural degree, so it suits me To me, there is just something exotic about the designs
I finally got around to looking at all the notes posted. Thanks for sharing. I like the design on the 1985 20 Dong the most. Someday, I'll have to pull out my Colombian Notes to scan and upload.
Hummmm I can honestly say that I know very little of foreign notes, however, #5 to me has a striking color and design, a fine piece of Art...all notes are very appealing to peruse. Thanks for sharing... Rickieb
