Doing two separate pictures. First picture will be the small date and second one will be large date s
The s on the large date is close to the 9 and 7. The small date one the s is farther apart from the 9 and 7
Both are large dates. I know, this is hard. I struggled with this for years thinking I constantly had SD cents. Here is an image I use and it has been really helpful. The mushy letters in LIBERTY are important.
Both large. The curl on the 9 is exactly the same on both coins. LIBERTY is often weakly struck on the small date, the point of the 9 is sharp, and blunt on the large date.
This is a small date. Better to see a whole coin than just close ups of just dates. Notice the curl of the 9 points to the 7. On the large date, the curl points to the S. Also notice how weak LIBERTY is struck
Everyone one of these are looking different. The s is close the other one is not. Take a look at this one. I've been looking at each other one. All look different. That's why I thought it could be a small and large.
Shrews you are not looking at the key marker which is the curl of the 9. The curl of the 9 that points down to the foot of the 7 is the Large date. See photo in post #12. That 9 is a real tweener. Post #13
Mint marks were hand punched at the time, leading them to be in different spots on every die. There were multiple dies used in 1970 by the San Fransisco mint, meaning some coins will have mintmarks in different locations. That does not change if it’s a small or large date.
