I have been relatively quiet on the purchase front recently. One of my specialist collecting areas is the coins of Probus from Lugdunum. I only seem to be able to add somewhere between 3 and 6 coins a year to this collection as the coins I am stil after seem to be less and less available on the market. There is a specialist collection coming to the market soon which I would like to obtain almost in it's entirity with regards to the coins of Probus from Lugdunum but I expect the prices to far exceed my meagre budget and doubt that I will obtain a single coin. I have recieved this coin this week which fills a nice gap. It is deemed common by RIC and Bastien cites 12 examples so that puts it in the common to scarce range. All this being said I have only seen one previous example come on to the market since 2006, when CNG had an example in stock but it went before I had a chance to buy it. Probus Obv:– IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right; seen from the rear Rev:– SPES PROBI AVG, Spes walking left, holding flower and raising robe Minted in Lugdunum (III in exe) Emission 7, Officina 3. A.D. 281 Reference:– Cohen 708. Bastien 324 (12 examples cited). RIC 99 Bust type C (Rated C) This example is in fairly decent condition, it is largely silvered, there is still some minor surface dirt in some areas and some red staining but I am more than happy with it. I am still chasing affter several other variations of the type that I am chasing after. I hope that my wait isn't as long for them to come along. Martin
The red dirt doesn't take away from such a nice coin. it's a real beauty and you should leave it as is.
That is a problem I am somewhat acquainted with, although in my case it is not as extreme. Congrats on being able to obtain a coin for that speciality!
