Natural toning will not climb letters or the rim in most cases, and the color is the same inside the lettering as on the lettering, a sign of AT, good AT but AT. This was an old slab back when the Dr's were fooling the TPG's.

That does not stop me from owning it or flipping it, this may sound unethical and is a question I was going over in my head a milion times a second, but I'm flipping an ANACS coin in a slab, no crackout, just a picture of a coin and an auction. This would have been no problem to bring to ANA and trade it for $1000, I have seen it many times over.

Ok, I just have one question--and please don't take this the wrong way, but...if you think it's AT, why would you pay that much money for it?

Fair question.....plastic sells, thats as honest as I can be

EDIT: That is not the only AT coin in PCGS, NGC, ICG or ANACS. They trade daily amongst experts who know what they are trading. I am no expert at all, I just saw a chance at a neat flip that does not happen to often.

Welcome aboard. Lucky for you you have not paid huge money for "monster toning".

i steer clear of toned coins completely and the owner would have to pay me to buy At coins

I actually had dreams about this last night. I am SOOO glad I did not win it, what was I thinking.

WOW, I am actually wondering what was I thinking. My apologies to the group, sincere apologies.

We all have moments of weakness. Auctions seem to bring out our weaknesses.

I couldnt agree with you more. There have been a few occasions I have spent a little more than I should on auction coins because of eye appeal. I like to be consistent with how my coins look in my sets. However, I have never bought a "monster toned" coin. Its just not attractive to me.

    Auction fever? Profit fever?

I don't know. I have seen some monster dollars trade at insane levels, I have a few myself, but what scares me, is that I knew it to be AT, and what hit me was thoughts of flipping it.

Anybody who knows me, knows I shoot fairly straight, and I was thinking...Ok, it's slabbed, so it must be ok to flip it, afterall, I'm not going to crack it out or lie about it, just " flip" it for profit. There is someone who will pay alot more than me, I have seen it a million times.

I regret that I got caught up in it, especially for a profit motive. Glad I did not win, I have learned just from this ALMOST thing.

Wow, some of those scoundrels who do this as an MO must have no thoughts as to what is right and wrong. I hope this does not linger as a bad taste, because it certainly is currently.

I don't know exactly what happened, here, that could be interpreted as leaving a "bad taste," but I found this thread and the responses intelligent, interesting and instructive, and I enjoyed reading it.

Eddie, there a a cpl seller on Ebay who on purpose buy ANACS problem slabs, crack out and sell raw to unsuspecting buyers, this is the way they Ebay. Thats what I meant by right and wrong.

Bad taste thing I mean, ever do something you regret and not stop thinking about it? Even almost doing it without even the crackout thing makes me feel pretty crappy today.

Well, the thread was informative, Jack, that's what I meant. And people "flip" real estate all the time, and, similarly, you thought you saw an opportunity, here, and you took it. If you had bought this coin and "flipped" it, so long as you hadn't intentionally misrepresented to the prospective bidders, what's the big deal? Like you and some of the others had suggested, there are collectors out there who go for these items, and, half the time they could care less whether it was baked in a potato or not, it's the monster toning they're appreciating. No harm no foul, just an interesting thread, that's all I see, here. Everything's kewl, and good luck on your next one. :kewl:

I've always thought of "monster toning" as seriously ugly. It still boggles my mind to think that people will actually pay MORE for a coin because of heavy tarnish. In a sane world it should make the coin worth a lot LESS, if not nothing at all.

And yes, I do realize that there are people who collect toned coins and have a preference for them. I still can't comprehend why though, especially when the toning is so heavy it is clearly heavy ugly tarnish or corrosion... whoever figured out how to market such coins at a huge premium when nobody should want to touch them with a 10 foot pole is a genius.

"Toning" is just a euphamism for "tarnish." I wonder if there's some euphamism I could come up with to convince people that scratches and dents make a coin more attractive, and thus more valuable. I could make a fortune selling all my damaged or worn coins and use the money to replace them with mint state coins that nobody will want anymore, since they're so less valuable lol...

I was going to suggest "personality", but I use that for significant die cracks.
How about "homey" or "lived in"? :D

Lol... reminds me of a Simpsons episode where Marge was trying to be a realtor, the person training him was trying to teach her how to describe houses better to make them more saleable.

    Marge: That house is tiny...

    Realtor: Cozy!

    Marge: That house is dilapidated...

    Realtor: Rustic!

Marge: That house is on fire!

    Realtor: Motivated seller!

    Its true too.
I was watching a show where they actually talked about that "cozy" means small... and a few other ones I of course cannot recall at the moment. lol
