We haven't had many Capped Bust Dime threads lately so I thought I would start one about the 'key' collector dates in the series, specifically 1809 and 1822. This is what I wrote about these two dates in a previous thread: The most popular and coveted date is the 1822. The reported mintage is 100000, but this is almost certainly too high. Between 200-250 specimens of the 1822 JR-1 dimes are estimated to exist today, according to the most recent references. Only 30 or less in grades better than VF. Some are, however, known in MS. After the 1822 JR-1, the second most popular date is probably the 1809 JR-1 dime. The reported mintage is 51065 examples. Between 200 and 300 of these are estimated to exist today. I searched a long time for mine. These are my current examples: Was lucky to find both an 1809 and an 1822 in a lot of ten dimes about 20 years ago. I then upgraded both, kept the lower grade ones. 1809: 1822: Lets hear your thoughts about these 'key' dates. Please share your examples if you own one.
I follow this date closely and your example is one of the better AG3's that I have seen. Evenly worn and toned. A very pretty coin.
Both coins have been on my radar for 6 years. I haven’t yet found a problem free 1822 that displays a full date. OP, if you ever want to sell one of your 1822’s, don’t hesitate to contact me, I will break the bank $$$$ for a quality 3 or 4. Here is my 1809......
I remember around 2008-2009 there was something approaching "1809 Dime Fever". Many collectors were out looking for an example, in any grade, and not finding one. I think that was about the time when prices for this coin increased rapidly. The 1809 attracts attention for many reasons: it is the first year of issue, it was struck in limited numbers, and it is genuinely scarce (not really rare unless you want a perfect example in VF to XF). In my opinion this date is not too far behind the 1822 in scarcity.
Politely disagree. 1809 is truly rare in all grades, as is 1822, depending on what you consider rarity. When you’re talking about less than a thousand being estimated to exist in all grades, how much rarer need it get to be constituted as “rare”?
Interesting point, and no doubt a topic for many lively discussions.... However, did I understand you correctly, you reckon that in the region of up to one thousand examples exist for the '09 and '22 combined? that would be higher than most published estimates, which hover around around 200-250 each. But I do agree, these dates are much scarcer (rarer if you wish) than many other modern so-called rare dates.
No, what I meant was, about 2-300 1809 and 200 1822 estimated to exist, both less than 1000 pieces in all grades.
Very nice upgrades, and very presentable lower tier examples. Most collectors would be proud to own lesser coins of those dates.
(sigh.....) Eduard, even your second-best examples are to die for! My own ‘09 is probably best described as FR2/AG3, but it’s pleasantly problem-free; still waiting for a ‘22 to drop from the heavens though (but not holding my breath).
Thanks. I wasn't implying it was not a nice coin, but just comparing it with the OPs F-VF, which is pretty awesome for an 1822, probably in the top 15%.
You’re obsession with 1809 reminds me of mine with 1916-D. Lol. Nice coin, but is that a scratch on the reverse or a lamination???
Very nice dimes! I collect capped bust dimes and someday I would like to own examples of both dates. Unfortunately I am embracing the “poor college student” lifestyle and can’t justify buying them... especially since I don’t own an 1824 quarter (the obtainable key date in my favorite series)! I would say 1822 is the rarer of the two, with 1809 in second place and 1811/09 a VERY close third (possibly beating out the 1809). Other than those three (and 1828 large date), the rest of the series is fairly obtainable.
