Hi all, I just received my JC portrait coin and started taking pictures. And later I plan on doin some sort of write up about this coin. But first I have to ask. What is the orange stuff spread out over the obverse?
I would wait for the experts to weigh in.. if it was me I would just soak it in distilled water and see if it just wipes off. Needless to say that is a fantastic coin.. congratulations!
Looks like good old fashioned dirt. It may come off easily as @Clavdivs suggested idk? A great coin by the way.
Coin may also be a candidate for a quick acetone bath. Some of the dark areas may not be toning but rather oils/tar or other organic materials.
It's a beautiful coin, and I wouldn't worry about the deposits, they don't detract at all. Better to leave the coin alone in my opinion. Congratulations!!
Thanks all. I think I might try to soak it in distilled water and then gently brush with a toothbrush. Some of the dirt looks like it will come of easy. I will not do anything heavy handed though. I really like the dark patina.
Since it's silver be very careful with that toothbrush. Soft bristles only. May we see the reverse too?
