I'm passing through on Wednesday, and will have a few hours to stretch my legs mid morning to early afternoon. I'll want to eat, but what better thing to do than hit up a coin shop just for fun? Preferably a walk though.
I believe Harlan J Berk isn't too far from Union Station (if your train is stopping there) https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Harlan J Berk Ltd, North Clark Street, Chicago, IL/union station chicago amtrak/@41.8803567,-87.6375,17z/data=!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x880e2cbb00ed616d:0x4c3e3dadd64fa9b4!2m2!1d-87.630667!2d41.882749!1m5!1m1!1s0x880e2c8dbbb32f5d:0x5f985dc0044b1109!2m2!1d-87.6390631!2d41.8786807
I've actually never been there (or on an Amtrak train), but that was the first store that came to mind. And I've heard good things (plus I bought a few inexpensive items from them through ebay-all easy and satisfactory transactions).
This is my 'big adventure'...I've taken the Northeast-whatever train for Baltimore, NYINC, and now the ANA. Much better than driving or flying--I decline to fly ever again in any kind of voluntary way. But, it's time to visit my mother so figured it would be quite the trip via train...3.5 days each way give or take, and the California Zephyr should be pretty cool--there will be parts of the country I've never seen before. I haven't been to Chicago probably in 20 years so it'll be nice to do some walking. Having a coin shop (and duh, HJB! I've bought a few of their less exalted coins) to visit is just icing on the cake. Perfect suggestion and location!
I live in the Chicago suburbs and used to work in the city. Harlan Berk is the only shop I'm aware of, and it's about a six-block walk from the train station. It's worth checking out. I've done Google searches to see if there's anything else in the city but the only ones that come up seem more like jewelry stores or private people who buy from people selling their collections.
There is also the Fed's Money Museum in downtown Chicago. Have not been there yet, but it is not far from Union Station, and maybe worth a visit ... Christian
Hey Ken , I d go with Harlan Berks too . I believe the address is 30 N. Clark , but might have the north wrong . Great shop with conservative grading especially on early commemoratives . They also have a huge ancient section .
The Money Museum would be cool too--thanks for the idea!! Sadly we are on about a 2 hour delay on arriving (car or pedestrian vs. freight train ahead of us per the rumor mill/car attendant), so I may not get a chance to see as much as I hoped on the trip out. First, food, next an extension cord (my room plug doesn't fit my Apple adapter for the laptop--though connectivity is likely to be poor and I won't be using it much). After that HJB and now the MM. In DC I was able to walk to the Supreme Court and the Capitol building for some outside shots, so maybe I'll just get a nice picture of the outside of the store .
Chicago born and raised check the downtown pawn emporiums for some great deals at below dealer pricing
