So This Kennedy half is in one of my 1972 D mint sets. Here are some pictures, can you guys tell me what you think?
Again (as someone else showed pics like this and so I'll answer the same way). To me? They look like DD's. I own some and I certainly would like to believe mine are genuine. They look much like some of mine.
There is a lengthy thread where members have been posting real doubled dies. I suggest checking it out.
Kennedys are notorious for machine doubling. I am not sure if yours is a doubled die, but if it is, it's so slight that I would leave it in the mint set.
Like others have said, your half dollar is an example of MDD (Machine Damage Doubling). There are two CONECA listed 72 DDR's in the Master Listings...http://varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/kennedy doubled dies 1971-1994.htm#_1972-D. Attached are some photos of the 72D DDR-001, 72D DDR-001 with both MDD and a Doubled Die, and a 72D DDR-002, note the -002 can be found in mint sets. Larry Nienaber
I’ve started setting these MDD examples aside thinking they were something, but is it now a correct assumption that they are spenders? What about extreme examples such as this 72 D?
I'm new here and have a 1972d half dollar and I'm proud to be here in the community. I'm learning a lot from you guys. Now I know my 1972d is just machine doubling. I'm not gonna spend it tho because it has no fg. I have I digital microscope and no sign whatsoever of the fg. Got it in my first bank box.
