    Hi all

I have 6 raw Morgan’s from my grandmas silver coin hoard that are is about this condition. Look nice, have some luster, but aren’t perfect.

Wondering what grade this level would be?

Also, don’t know why posting upside down?

Curious - for educational not argument - what makes it AU vs MS? When I look at the Photograde app and slabbed examples more often than not AU 58 - MS64 seem almost identical. Would love to k ow what I’m looking for.

AU shows ever so slight signs of wear on the high spots. MS shows no signs of wear. There is a large difference between a 58 and a 64.

MS coins show bag marks. Places where coins hit each other. An AU coin will show rubbing at the high points. Lady Liberty's hair. The eagles chest and wings. A seasoned guy like @Collecting Nut can spot that in a second. I still have to study a nice coin for rubbing on the high places. My eyes tend to gloss over when I am viewing a nice coin and can miss the subtle difference as my lust for the piece takes hold..... Look at the coin in my avatar. It is the most eye appealing and spectacular piece I own. It is an AU58 coin. I'll post it below. Look at where Liberty's gown flows over her left leg. Look closely at her right arm and the high places on her chest..... That rubbing is caused by light circulation and changes a spectacular MS to an AU. And on something like a Morgan will have quite the affect on the price point too.

Thank you. I know there is a huge difference I mean just to my eye it’s hard to spot the differences!

Just be willing to learn and you'll start seeing the differences.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I think the upside down coin pictures are an interesting experiment in grading. It makes us think less about the design, and how attractive the design is, and focus more on the actual condition of the coin.

The difference between AU and MS is that AU has wear. You'll see traces of that in the fields and on the high points of the coin (usually, Liberty's cheek, hair, and the eagle's breast on a Morgan dollar). I see no wear on your coin.

I'd give this coin an MS-63 grade.

And, if you want to learn how to grade coins, I strongly suggest you check out my book, linked in my signature below. It will explain in detail all of the terms we use like wear, luster, contact marks, eye appeal, and how to evaluate a coin.

My Iphone takes videos upside down when taking wide videos. Perhaps the same kind of thing here. Maybe somebody else knows why exactly.

I'm seeing what I think is wear in the center of the right hand wing (or left if it were right side up but I'm especially terrible at grading Morgans. I'd venture a guess as mid AU.

You can have some very beautiful and pleasing AU coins that rival ugly, baggy, Mint state (61/62) coins. Your's (OP) is a lovely example of an AU coin. IMHO.......

This is a trick third party autograph authenticators use! They look at the autograph upside down because that helps show telltale signs of authentic / forgery and it keeps you from getting sucked into the "overall" which can be misleading!

PS - I want to pick up your book once my book buying funds are replenished - Been going a little nutty with the rare film adaptations lately

I had a grandma that left me some Indian Head Cents..........treasured relics. They ain't in the best of condition, but they came from family. They wouldn't grade out better than G/VG but I treasure them none the least.........
