Is it preferred practice to create a new thread for new coins you have acquired or to resurrect older threads that refer to the same ruler, etc? Perhaps for my low end acquisitions a new thread is not warranted? I do like posting them here as I learn a lot from member's feedback and the better examples shown. Please let me know what method I should use.. *I was at a tiny local coin show this morning.. more to pick up some supplies as I knew it would be all moderns. One table had a single 3 page binder of LRBs - the vendor was happy to discount and move some out cheap. These two had very nice portraits and were from mints I did not have examples from: Julian II, AE3 Alexandria, AD 360-363. DN FL CL IVLIANVS PF AVG, Helmeted and cuirassed bust left, holding spear and shield / VOT X MVLT XX in four lines within wreath. Mintmark palm branch-ALEB-palm branch. RIC VIII Alexandria 91. Probus AE Antoninianus. Tripolis mint. IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / CLEMENTIA TEMP dot, Emperor standing right, holding eagle-tipped sceptre, receiving globe from Jupiter, holding sceptre. Crescent in lower centre. mintmark KA.
I don't think it matters. I suppose if something about a new coin applies to the old discussion than it could be useful. Or just link to the old thread.
Oh, nice additions! I don't have a Probus but here's mine from Julian: Julian II, AD 360-363 AE3, 21mm, 2.6g, 12h; Heraclea mint: 361-363 Obv.: D N FL CL IVLIANVS P F AVG; helmeted, cuirassed bust left holding spear and shield. Rev.: SECVRITAS REIPVB; Bull standing right, two stars above, eagle to right, standing right on wreath, holding another wreath in its beak In Ex.: SCONST Oh, I do have an Alexandrian tetradrachm from Probus: Probus, AD 276-282 Potin, tetradrachm, 7.5g, 20mm; 11h; Alexandria, AD 276/277 (regnal year 2) Obv.: A K M AVP PPO-BOC CEB; laureate cuirassed bust right Rev.: LB; Dikaiosyne standing left holding scales & cornucopiae Ref.: Geissen 3127, Dattari 5527 Dikaiosyne is a personification or spirit of jusitice and righteousness. Cool! It's always fun to pick up a new coin for the collection! Here's a Julian II VOT X MVLT XX from my collection: Julian II, 361-363. Roman Silvered AE 3 Centenionalis; 3.16 g. 18.3 mm. Antioch mint, AD 362-363. Obv: D N FL CL IVLIANVS P F, helmeted and cuirassed bust, left, holding spear and shield. Rev: VOT X MVLT XX, legend within wreath; in exergue: ANTA between two palm fronds. Refs: RIC 220; Cohen 151; RCV 19181; LRBC 2642.
Nice pickups As for your question, there's not an absolute right or wrong. These days I tend to start a new thread if I've put any effort into a writeup. If I'm just showing the coin and maybe saying a sentence or two other than the attribution, if there is a good thread that relates to the coin I'll post it there.
I really regret not having a match for your Alexandria mint Julian II. I love the style. I'll make up for that showing two of the Probus. One is like your coin a bit more than the other. The other is a bit more like the description you copied than like your coin. Is it silly to have both of these coins? There is just a dot of difference. Ordinarily I would not keep both but here we have my best example of a coin with lots of retained silvering that I do not find as attractive as the one without it. I do not collect Probus to the point that I worry about a dot or not but I do like pretty coins. These two coins also differ in style and I prefer the artwork shown on the one with less silver and no dot. The silvered one cost almost twice the price of the multicolor one. If these two coins butted heads in Curtisimo's contest, which would win? Eye appeal is a matter of opinion. How much value is added by the silvering? The historical and numismatic interest could be written to favor either one.
If I already have a Julian and want to post it today because of the inspiration of your thread, it is normal to add it to the existing thread. However, if I buy a coin that could have fit in to an old thread when it was active, but that thread is long dormant, I'd start a new one. I'd link to the old thread if its responses would be relevant to the one I was starting. CoinTalk has a great search function which makes it possible to find old threads on any given topic.
I think it’s great for you to start a new thread showing off a recent pickup. It allows other members to discuss and post their recent additions as well. Friday I went to the BRNA Annual Convention in Dalton, GA. I picked up these three from Pegasi Numismatics and met one of the directors at the same time. Super nice guy. He let me troll through his bargain bin tray for some Probus and I picked up an Elagabalus as well. I wish I had more time to go through his inventory but was in a rush.
