I found a nickle that is very thin (almost sharp its so thin). It is also smaller in diameter than it should be (slightly bigger than a penny). The features are discernable but worn either from time or from the press not "reaching" the thin metal. Anyone see anything like this before?
Is the date and mintmark visible at all?????? If it is very old it could be wear from circulation I suppose.....but if it is a new coin I would not think it would have had time for this to happen naturally without help........a picture would be nice if you could post one........
Looking at the coin more closely I can see what appears to be 196-. The head on the front and the building on the back are in pretty good detail but all of the lettering closer to the edges is very faint. I can read it on the back, but not the front except for the part of date. There is no raised edge like on normal nickels, so the words are right at the edge, almost cut off. Can't be wear I guess because the coin is so thin and the detail is pretty good except for the edges. I'll try to get a pic posted (how do you get closeups like I see on this site)?
Sounds like you have an "acid job". A coin will end up being thinner and smaller than normal if immersed in certain acids or other corrosive liquids. If the design elements are all present but are uniformly fuzzy, then that would clinch the diagnosis.
Pics I scanned the nickel. I have three pics: Front, Back, and Edge(held between stacks of pennys). I don't know how to do an attatchment here but I will try.
