My first guess the grade (unless I forgot about one ). . . This isn’t my coin, but I’ve been on the hunt for one. So, how would you grade it?
I’ll go MS 64 I’m guessing those aren’t scratches on the coin but die polishing lines (or something on the holder)...the coin also looks semi-prooflike. I had a Hawaiian Quarter that was semi-pl (and now have a toned Quarter). I’m a fan of these and think that you’ll enjoy an example for your collection.
The obverse looks like it may have been scratched onto sand? If it came from Hawaii I think that could be a plausible explanation for the hairlines.
It’s been a long day (up since 4:30 AM) and I’m tired, so here’s the early reveal. I was also in the cleaned/scratches camp. Anyone other than @ddddd and @ddoomm1 thinking otherwise?
These coins interest me and I’ve seen a fair number of them, often with ugly (IMHO) toning. Maybe that’s why I’m leaning toward cleaned/scratched and not die polish lines.
It's difficult to tell from the photos, but based on the grade it must be hairline scratches or contact marks. The full coin photos (especially the reverse) make the coin look much better than the grade indicates.
Here is the quarter that I owned that was semi-pl in hand (photos were meant to show the pl qualities):
These coins sometimes come in a prooflike condition. The obverse does not look like cleaning - it looks like die polish. Normally, when you see cleaning hairlines, they are parallel. These are random - not an effective cleaning method. Also, I don't see evidence of the lines on the portrait or lettering, as you would expect on a cleaned coin. So yeah, I'm going to go with a semi-prooflike obverse. Based on your first pics, I would have guessed 63. However, the slab shot shows a lot more disturbance on the obverse fields. I probably would still go 62 because that is an attractive coin.
Ditto what Physics said. I was at 63/64 until i saw all the rub/ chatter in the slab photo. Still better than a 61 imo. I spotted polish lines that run through the O & U so it looks kosher to my eye.
