I've looked in VV and Wexler's and find no listing of this if it is in fact a DDO? The inner and outer ear along with the hair above and in front of the ear show doubling. If it were just the ear itself I could see MD, but given the hair too shows signs, makes me think I'm on to something? There's also a triple spread on the "UST" of TRUST that I can't get to show in any picture.
What do the " Stars " look like under the lower letters of " States Of America " ? What do the " Stars " look like under " UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, stars between rays, and E PLURIBUS UNUM " ?
Upon a closer examination with my "super loupe", I also see minor spread on all of IGWT with the emphasis on the UST, date, and designer's initials. Other than the flared G, there's nothing going on with the reverse. Guess I'll pack it up and send off to Wexler's for attribution.
Nice catch Rick, I totally missed that. The glare off the coin from the light on my loupe must have drowned that out. I looked it over again and along with the Y, there is a spread of the upper half of the L also. I'll go through Wexler again this morning and see if I can match up anything, but from all the ones listed, none mentioned any doubling of the profile?
Here's a link to Coneca quick chart . http://varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/kennedy doubled dies 1967-1970.htm#_1968-S_1
Looked at all the listings and none mention the profile & hair. Neither Wexler or NGC even have the 68's listed to compare to. What are the odds it's slipped through the cracks all these years?
If you want help or any opinions with an attribution of your half dollar you need to add other photos of the doubling. I can tell you the doubling on the profile and in and around the ear would be MDD. I think the doubling on the Y of LIBERTY that you show may just be from a MD (Master Die). Larry Nienaber
